A spinoff series based on “Doctor Who” is scheduled to air on television in 2025, however, there’s been no official announcement about when (or if) the main series will resume for a new season. This uncertainty has increased since Billie Piper took on the lead role of The Doctor at the conclusion of the most recent season, which added an unexpected twist. Regrettably, we’re still waiting for further information, but the recent renewal comments from showrunner Russell T. Davies have piqued my interest.
The BBC collaborated with Disney for their 60th anniversary and for seasons featuring Ncuti Gatwa, enabling viewers in the U.S. to stream episodes using Disney+. There were whispers of potential changes at the beginning of the year, but during an interview with Pilot TV, Davies mentioned something intriguing that caught my attention – he’s just as clueless about the upcoming developments as everyone else.
At the moment, there’s no news to share – things are quiet on both The BBC and Disney’s fronts. When something happens, you’ll be the first to know. But remember, I work for Bad Wolf, not either of those companies, so I’m not privy to their discussions. Even my colleagues here at Bad Wolf don’t have all the details. So, just like them, I can only say that I don’t know anything more than what has been publicly announced.
The drawback here is that Russell T. Davies hasn’t received any word yet about whether or not Doctor Who will be renewed for another season. Potentially positive news, however, is that it seems like Disney and The BBC are still in discussions, suggesting they might continue their collaboration as joint producers on the show when a new season is prepared.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “Navigating the terrain of being asked to rejoin the franchise has been quite a maze for me, much like navigating the labyrinth of time and space as my iconic character on ‘Doctor Who.’ Billie Piper here, and yes, it’s been a thrilling journey each step of the way!
I’m really hoping for Disney and the BBC to keep collaborating on “Doctor Who,” given how well it worked out when Ncuti Gatwa was the main character. It’s disappointing he didn’t get another season, but what bothered me even more was the thought of losing the stunning visual effects that came with Disney’s involvement. Finding another partner like BBC Studios might be possible, but it’s not always guaranteed.
Furthermore, I appreciate the blend of “Doctor Who” and Disney in the U.S. I’m keeping hope alive, alongside many others, that one day we might witness The Doctor at Disney theme parks, or at a minimum, the TARDIS.
It appears that Doctor Who hasn’t been renewed for a new season yet and is in uncertainty due to worries about its viewership and finances, specifically concerning Disney. This leads me to question if they truly believe that bringing back Billie Piper as the lead will attract old viewers who stopped watching or draw in new ones. If not, Disney might consider ending their partnership, or Piper’s portrayal of the character could be brief.
In due course, together with Russell T. Davies, we’ll find out when the next season of Doctor Who is coming out and where to catch it online. Until then, why not check out the latest episodes on Disney+, and don’t forget to stay tuned for updates on the show throughout the rest of the year.
