Every Star Wars Emmy Award and nomination explained

As a dedicated Star Wars fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I can hardly contain my excitement when it comes to the recognition our beloved franchise has received from the prestigious Emmy Awards. From the early days of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to the latest offerings like Young Jedi Adventures, the quality of Lucasfilm’s work has consistently been celebrated by the Academy.

Last week, the series “Young Jedi Adventures” was nominated for four Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. It now shares this recognition with other esteemed Star Wars animated shows that have also received Emmy nominations and awards. Which other television programs have been acknowledged by the Academy?

Here is every Star Wars Emmy Award win or nomination

By 2013, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” garnered numerous nominations and awards in the categories of animation and children’s programming for the Daytime Emmys. Throughout its duration, it was nominated a total of 15 times and managed to secure five wins during this period. Among these victories were two for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program.

David Tennant, the voice actor behind droid Huyang in shows like “The Clone Wars”, “Ahsoka”, and “Young Jedi Adventures”, received the Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program award in 2013 for his performance during the series’ fifth season. Interestingly, Tennant wasn’t the only actor from “The Clone Wars” to receive Emmy recognition. Jim Cummings, Mark Hamill, and Sam Witwer were all nominated for Daytime Emmys that year for their voice work on the same show. Despite being famous for playing Luke Skywalker, Hamill voiced the character Darth Bane during the sixth season of “The Clone Wars”.

At the time of writing, Tennant is the only actor to win an acting Emmy in the Star Wars franchise.

The series Star Wars Rebels carried on its tradition, earning four Primetime Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Children’s Program category twice. Likewise, Star Wars Resistance was also recognized in this category for both seasons it aired during 2019 and 2020. Lastly, Star Wars: Visions received an Emmy award in the same category for “Screecher’s Reach” under the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Win for Production Design, and was nominated again in 2023.

Despite being in just its second season, “Young Jedi Adventures” has garnered a remarkable ten nominations for Children’s and Family Awards. This significant recognition speaks volumes about the quality of the series, given that the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards are still relatively new, entering their third year.

Every Star Wars Emmy Award and nomination explained

Last season, “Young Jedi Adventures” bagged two Children and Family Emmy Awards, one for Outstanding Editing and another for Sound Mixing. Furthermore, composer Matthew Margeson was nominated for his exceptional work on the series’ musical score.

Margeson becomes part of a distinguished group of musicians recognized for their contributions to the franchise’s music. Notably, John Williams secured an Oscar for his score in A New Hope, and was nominated five times for his compositions within the Star Wars series. Similarly, Ludwig Göransson garnered back-to-back Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on The Mandalorian. Additionally, Nicholas Britell received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his contributions to Andor, and Kevin Kiner amassed four nominations for his work on both The Clone Wars and Rebels.

This list doesn’t even include the long list of Creative Arts Emmy Awards, where Star Wars has also been honored many times, most recently with the late Shawna Trpcic posthumously winning for Ahsoka‘s costume design.

With each fresh wave of captivating Star Wars content, accolades such as Emmys seem destined to follow, given the consistently impressive work of Lucasfilm that never fails to catch the attention of award committees annually.
