Forgotten Animated Disney Movies That Deserve Another Look

1. The Rescuers Down Under (1990)
While many didn’t clamor for a follow-up to the 1977 Disney film The Rescuers, The Rescuers Down Under (1990) surprisingly surpasses the original. This adventure focuses on two mouse secret agents who journey to the Australian Outback to rescue a kidnapped boy from a ruthless poacher. The film boasts stunning aerial sequences rivaling those in How to Train Your Dragon, a beautifully realized Australian landscape, and vibrant animation. Though sandwiched between Disney classics The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, it remains a fondly remembered favorite for those who grew up watching VHS tapes in the 1990s.

2. Onward (2020)
Pixar’s 2020 film, Onward, unfortunately suffered because of its release timing. It came out just as movie theaters were closing nationwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly hurt its chances of success in theaters. Many people were understandably focused on current events at the time and didn’t notice it, although it did find an audience through video-on-demand services.
It’s a shame that even now, five years later, Onward is often left out of discussions about the best recent Pixar films. It’s a genuinely touching and magical adventure with beautiful animation, charming characters, and a meaningful story about dealing with loss and moving forward.

3. Treasure Planet (2002)
Released in 2002, Treasure Planet is a unique animated sci-fi reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. It came out during a time when CGI animation was becoming more popular after hits like Toy Story and Shrek, but unfortunately, it didn’t do well in theaters. However, over time, Treasure Planet has gained a dedicated fanbase who appreciate its compelling characters, beautiful blend of storybook visuals and science fiction, and heartfelt story about finding your place in the world. As one character says, it truly has the potential to be a classic.

4. Dinosaur (2000)
Disney’s Dinosaur, released at the start of the new millennium, was a visually innovative film that combined live-action and computer animation. It tells the story of a dinosaur searching for a new home after a devastating meteor strike, along with the family he finds along the way. Despite being the highest-grossing animated movie of its year, receiving good reviews, and even inspiring a Disney World ride, the film has largely been forgotten. It seems to have been overshadowed by Disney’s shift away from its celebrated Renaissance period.

5. The Black Cauldron (1985)
1985’s The Black Cauldron is a bit of a divisive film among Disney fans. It was a major box office disappointment when it came out and is often called the movie that nearly ruined Disney, due to its departure from the original books, dark themes, and underdeveloped characters. However, over the past 40 years, it’s gained a dedicated cult following. People appreciate its distinctive dark fantasy style, beautiful animation, and truly frightening villain.

6. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Among Disney fans, Atlantis: The Lost Empire is likely the least forgotten, with many passionately hoping for a live-action adaptation. However, it’s not widely known by the general public and Disney rarely mentions it. This is probably because it came out after Disney’s hugely successful Renaissance period and was quite different from the popular Disney films of the time.
The movie is a thrilling, action-packed adventure about a diverse team of explorers searching for the lost city of Atlantis and a powerful ancient force. While not flawless, it’s a visually stunning and entertaining film with a unique style inspired by Jules Verne and memorable characters.

7. Meet the Robinsons (2007)
Released in 2007, Meet the Robinsons came out during a challenging period for Disney, after the studio’s successful Renaissance era. It struggled to find an audience amidst strong competition from Pixar, resulting in poor box office numbers and the cancellation of any planned sequels. However, over time, the film—which tells the story of a young orphan inventor who travels to the future to alter his destiny—has gained a dedicated following. Viewers appreciate its surprisingly heartfelt story, quirky characters, and unique, optimistic vision of the future.

8. Brother Bear (2003)
Disney’s Brother Bear, released in 2003, is a beautiful, traditionally animated film that often gets overlooked. It came out around the same time as hugely popular movies like Lilo & Stitch, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles, which meant it didn’t get as much attention. However, Brother Bear tells a heartwarming story about family and forgiveness that appeals to everyone. It also boasts stunning animation of North American landscapes, a memorable soundtrack by Phil Collins, and excellent voice performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Suarez.

9. A Bug’s Life (1998)
Despite being a Pixar film, 1998’s A Bug’s Life often gets overlooked when people discuss the studio’s most important movies. While some consider it a classic – and rightfully so – it’s largely seen as less memorable than other big Pixar hits.
The creative story centers on a well-intentioned but awkward ant who tries to find help for his colony, only to stumble upon a quirky group of circus fleas. It’s a charming and visually appealing film filled with funny and memorable characters, and it surprisingly tackles important themes like capitalism and the strength of working together.

10. Bolt (2008)
I remember really enjoying Bolt when it came out in 2008 – it was a fun, solid movie! But looking back, it feels like it’s become a bit forgotten. It tells the story of Bolt, a dog who stars in a TV show and genuinely believes he has superpowers, and his journey home after accidentally leaving the set. It arrived right when Pixar was dominating the box office, and in between Disney’s two big periods of success – the Renaissance and the more recent Revival with Tangled. While it didn’t quite reach the artistic heights of those films or become a huge cultural phenomenon, it’s still a really charming and heartwarming adventure with a fantastic voice cast and such bright, energetic animation. It always puts a smile on my face!

11. Frankenweenie (2012)
Tim Burton’s quirky horror-comedy Frankenweenie, released in 2012, seems to have faded from memory, even when people talk about Halloween movies for families. This is unfortunate, given the impressive artistry behind this fun take on classic sci-fi horror. The movie, originally a short film by Disney and Burton in 1984, tells the story of a boy who brings his dog back to life, leading to trouble when his friends try to copy his experiment. With beautiful black-and-white stop-motion animation and lovable characters, this overlooked Burton film is surprisingly heartwarming, even with its reanimated subject matter.
