Every Marvel, DC and comic book movie coming in 2025 and beyond

As someone who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and blockbuster movies alike, I must say that the upcoming slate of superhero films is nothing short of exhilarating! From the Russo Brothers’ “Avengers: Secret Wars” to James Gunn’s fresh take on DC’s beloved characters, it seems like our favorite heroes are ready to grace the silver screen once more.

Over the next few years, it seems like we’re merely spectators in a universe dominated by superheroes. With an overflow of Marvel and DC films lined up for release, the cinema world is about to witness their impact at the box office once more. Marvel Studios are busy adding new chapters to their already sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe, while James Gunn and Peter Safran prepare to introduce the DC Universe through Man of Steel and Supergirl.

Over time, comic book films have been instrumental in shaping today’s must-watch cinema culture. Despite a general downturn in box office revenue, superhero movies persistently strive to create an indelible impression on the big screen, and in recent years, they’ve left a significant positive impact at movie theaters with our beloved heroes.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is adapting its approach and planning to produce content for the long term (with enthusiasm renewed following the successes of Deadpool and Wolverine), while Sony’s Marvel films provide occasional additions to the genre. As previously stated, the DC franchise continues to be part of the picture, as it ventures into the superhero movie landscape with assurances of a fresh, more consistent cinematic universe.

Here to assist you in staying updated on the hype surrounding superhero movies! Can you tell us about the upcoming release? Is it connected to a well-established cinematic universe you’re familiar with? Which actors will reprise their roles in the follow-up film?

The upcoming live-action films now have confirmed release dates in cinemas, as follows is the most recent information about their scheduling.

Kraven the Hunter

Release Date: December 13, 2024

Although Kraven is often considered one of Spider-Man’s top villains by fans, he hasn’t made an appearance in any of the eight live-action Spiderman movies (he was part of the Sinister Six in the Spider-Man Broadway show). By dedicating a movie to Kraven, Sony aims to rectify his past absence. In this film, Kraven will be portrayed as an anti-hero, much like Venom and Morbius, where he pursues his target relentlessly.

The casting for “Kraven the Hunter” looks promising, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who demonstrated his versatility as Kick-Ass and Quicksilver in successful superhero films, being tapped for the role. Previously, his performances as these characters were starkly contrasting, and Kraven could present an opportunity for a more introspective and multifaceted portrayal by the actor.

The remarkable indie actor, Christopher Abbott, will portray the assassin Foreigner, while the sensational singer/dancer Ariana DeBose will aim to enchant as the voodoo sorceress Calypso. The illustrious Russell Crowe will play Kraven’s father, but Alessandro Nivola may be the actor to look out for in this movie. After a pair of smaller parts in profound film festival favorites this fall (The Brutalist and The Room Next Door) the versatile Nivola may steal the spotlight in Kraven when he transforms into Rhino.

In the ongoing Sony Marvel Universe, “Kraven” is set to be the sixth film following the Venom trilogy, Morbius, and Madame Web. Among all directors in this franchise, Aneurin Barnard (Chandor) has shown exceptional skill, raising expectations that he’ll elevate the quality even further. Whether Kraven and the other films will interconnect remains to be seen. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as Venom: Let There Be Carnage and The Last Dance, we’ve seen that the Venom movies exist in a different universe compared to the MCU. Curiously, at the end of Morbius, Michael Keaton’s Vulture was transported to this reality. It’s uncertain if any of these established villains will face off against Kraven.

Captain America: Brave New World

Release Date: The film will be out on February 14, 2025.

The first Captain America movie was released approximately nine years prior to the premiere of Brave New World. Over three standalone Captain America films and four Avengers movies, Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers embodied freedom. His final appearance was in Avengers: Endgame, where he passed his shield to Anthony Mackie’s Falcon as he bid farewell.

Sam Wilson didn’t jump straight into leading the team of heroes; instead, he embarked on his journey to become Captain America in the limited series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” With Steve Rogers no longer around, “Brave New World” marks the first big-screen adventure for the new Captain America. Unlike previous films where he battled adversaries like Baron Zemo or U.S. Agent, this movie will introduce a new challenge in the form of Tim Blake Nelson’s character, The Leader. This is an unusual twist as The Leader usually poses a threat to The Hulk, but it seems he will be making a comeback after over a decade, having last appeared in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk.” This development comes as quite a surprise because of the significant time gap and The Leader’s traditional role as an adversary to The Hulk.

In a new turn of events for the Marvel franchise, Liv Tyler will once again embody her character from “The Incredible Hulk”. In this upcoming production, the role of her father will be played by Harrison Ford, following the demise of William Hurt. The talented Nigerian-American director, Julius Onah, is set to take over the franchise from the Russo Brothers. Known for his knack for creating suspenseful scenes, as seen in “Luce”, Onah’s style could align perfectly with the tense sequences characteristic of other Captain America movies like “Civil War” and “The Winter Soldier”. As for Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier, portrayed by Sebastian Stan, there’s no word yet on whether he will team up with Captain America in “Brave New World”, but it is confirmed that he will be joining a new group.

Thunderbolts*

Launch Date: May 2, 2025

The Thunderbolts are a group of villains who aren’t exactly heroes. After more than 30 Marvel movies, we’ll see a team-up of supervillains for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although individual villains have appeared together in stories, they haven’t formed a large team in a significant follow-up event before. So, the introduction of the Thunderbolts promises an exciting addition to the franchise.

The role of gathering the Thunderbolts team has always been assigned to Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfuss. She functions somewhat like Nick Fury does within the Avengers, being the recruiter for the team. So far, she’s made appearances in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” where she transformed Captain Walker into U.S. Agent, in “Black Widow” by encouraging Yelena to target Hawkeye, and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” revealing her as the CIA’s head. Interestingly, she didn’t appear in the “Hawkeye” miniseries; however, a cameo in “Captain America: Brave New World” could be expected.

As a die-hard fan, I’m excited to share that Bucky Barnes, otherwise known as the Winter Soldier, will be the star among the Thunderbolts squad in this upcoming movie. The reason? He’s the only one who’s also served time with the Avengers. His former rival from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” John Walker, is set to learn how to work alongside him.

Superman

Launch Date: July 11, 2025

In a new development, James Gunn isn’t new to the DC Universe, but he’s set to introduce Superman in a significant way for the updated movie franchise that he’s managing, much like how Kevin Feige manages the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previously, Gunn worked on The Suicide Squad and its spin-off series Peacemaker, and now he’ll play a major role in Superman as both writer and director once more.

In a swift assembly, the ensemble of this film has been finalized, featuring David Corenswet as the son of Krypton. This change may disappoint DCEU fans who cherished Henry Cavill’s aerial acrobatics in the movies. The key roles that flesh out the narrative are occupied by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult stepping into Lex Luthor’s shoes, and Nathan Fillion portraying the Green Lantern character, specifically Guy Gardner. Notably, Fillion is a frequent collaborator of James Gunn, displaying his deadpan wit in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, directed by Gunn.

James Gunn opted to discard the “Legacy” subtitle and title the movie solely as Superman. This is a daring choice given that fans have been split on the path of DC films lately, yet there’s little doubt about their devotion to the 1978 original Superman. Gunn faces an uphill battle, as he needs to distinguish his vision from not just Richard Donner’s classic portrayal, but also Bryan Singer’s and Zack Snyder’s interpretations of the character.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Release Date: July 25, 2025
Director: Matt Shakman
Writers: Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer

Cast:
• Pedro Pascal – Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards
• Vanessa Kirby – Invisible Woman/Sue Storm
• Ebon Moss-Bachrach – Thing/Ben Grimm
• Joseph Quinn – Human Torch/Johnny Storm
• Ralph Ineson – Galactus
• Julia Garner – Silver Surfer/Shalla-Bal
• John Malkovich
• Paul Walter Hauser
• Natasha Lyonne

The Fantastic Four has made two films this century, with the latest one released in 2015 and directed by Josh Trank. Unfortunately, it didn’t fare well, either critically or commercially, despite Michael B. Jordan from “Black Panther” playing the Human Torch. A decade earlier, in 2005, Tim Story directed a pair of Fantastic Four films that were more lighthearted and suitable for families. Chris Evans, who later became Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, played Johnny Storm in these movies.

Currently, it’s Marvel Cinematic Universe’s time to delve into the superhero family saga. The director behind the Spider-Man “Home” trilogy, Jon Watts, was initially in discussions for steering the franchise but has decided to step away from comic book adaptations, creating a vacancy that Matt Shakman is set to fill. Known for his work on “WandaVision”, Shakman directed all nine episodes of this near-flawless limited series. If he can bring a similar passionate quirkiness to “First Steps”, the film could be just as remarkable as his Disney Plus production.

The surprising move that left fans amazed was John Krasinski taking on the role of Mister Fantastic in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”. However, this interpretation of the character existed in an alternate universe, paving the way for Pedro Pascal to make his mark in another cherished universe. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, known for his role as Micro in Netflix’s “The Punisher”, and Joseph Quinn, who was loved as Eddie Munson in “Stranger Things”, also join this talented ensemble. Interestingly, among them, the least likely to attend comic-cons is the most accomplished actor of the group, Vanessa Kirby.

Avengers: Doomsday

Release Date: May 1, 2026
Directors: The Russo Brothers
Writer: Stephen McFeely

Characters:

As a dedicated Marvel fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the fifth “Avengers” movie, originally titled “The Kang Dynasty.” However, ever since Jonathan Majors’ departure due to personal conduct issues, there’s been a noticeable void in the narrative. Now, it seems that the MCU is shifting away from Kang-centric storylines and instead, the spotlight will be on Doctor Doom. I can hardly wait to see how this iconic villain will weave his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

One intriguing revelation from San Diego Comic-Con is that Robert Downey Jr. will take on the role of Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, serving as the main adversary for the Avengers for some time to come. Will Downey Jr.’s portrayal focus solely on Victor von Doom or might his past as Iron Man be woven into the storyline? Given the ongoing exploration of the multiverse in the franchise, it’s plausible that Doctor Doom could be an alternate version of Iron Man from another universe, which could make for a compelling narrative twist.

Indeed, it’s clear that Doctor Doom will encounter genuine heroes in the storyline. As of now, only heroes who haven’t starred in their own movies yet have been mentioned – that would be the Fantastic Four. Their debut, or “first steps,” is set a year before “Doomsday,” which might pave the way for an Avengers collaboration. There’s speculation that this story could introduce Doctor Doom under the Fantastic Four’s main banner. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, Benedict Cumberbatch has hinted at preparing to reprise his role as Doctor Strange for the upcoming Avengers blockbuster.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Release Date: June 26, 2026
Director: Craig Gillespie
Writer: Ana Nogueira

Cast:
• Milly Alcock – Supergirl/Kara Zor-El
• Matthias Schoenaerts – Krem

James Gunn’s version of Superman is shaping up to serve as a springboard for upcoming DCU projects. Following Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of Guy Gardner, it appears that other Green Lanterns will light up in the HBO Max series, Lanterns. Characters like Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and Mister Terrific may reappear in future content. However, the main emphasis following Superman is expected to be on the Supergirl spinoff, Woman of Tomorrow.

In contrast to James Gunn’s Superman, whose title is now similar to the respected Richard Donner classic (having dropped “Legacy”), the Woman of Tomorrow subtitle distinguishes this project from the 1984 film and the Arrowverse TV series, both titled Supergirl. The name Woman of Tomorrow comes from a well-known contemporary DC comics storyline.

As a gamer excitedly anticipating the future of cinematic storytelling, I can’t help but be thrilled by the news that Milly Alcock, who impressed us all as Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon,” will make her debut as Supergirl in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film. This news is just the cherry on top, as I also learned that Craig Gillespie has been hired to direct “Woman of Tomorrow.

Spider-Man 4

Release Date: The movie will be out on July 24, 2026

Previously in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man was a secret to all, and everyone’s recollection of Peter himself had been completely wiped out. In the closing scenes of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Doctor Strange employed a spell to stop the chaos across the multiverse. This means that Peter must now face challenges independently more so than in his initial solo adventure – unlike in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, where Spider-Man collaborated closely with Iron Man.

Consequently, a multitude of storylines for “Spider-Man 4” could unfold, yet it’s scheduled to premiere just a few months after the fifth “Avengers.” Given this timing, it’s likely that the catastrophic events of the Avengers’ epic may influence Spider-Man’s solo movie. In the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, stories often remain independent by taking place in different realities, which is a possibility that the producers might consider.

Regardless, Tom Holland and Zendaya will don their superhero gear again, with Jon Watts passing the baton to Destin Daniel Cretton for the sub-franchise. Cretton, who has experience within the MCU having directed the critically acclaimed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was initially slated to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but plans changed, and Kevin Feige shifted focus towards Doomsday. Cretton is also set to helm the pilot episode for the Disney Plus series Wonder Man, leaving us wondering if the anti-Tony Stark character will feature in Spider-Man 4.

The Batman – Part II

Launch Date: October 2, 2026

In contrast to James Gunn’s innovative direction with the DC Universe, Warner Bros.’ DC branch will continue producing standalone DC superhero films, which they’ve labeled as DC Elseworlds. Notably, The Joker and Batman franchises belong to this separate universe.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but express my thoughts on the latest Batman series. While it sparked some debate among die-hard DC fanatics, it managed to pull in the numbers that secured a sequel for the studio. What’s truly peculiar about this Batman saga is that Michael Keaton’s return as Bruce Wayne seems etched in our minds, while Ben Affleck unexpectedly extended his tenure, and a newcomer might join the DC Universe. One of Gunn’s upcoming projects, “The Brave and the Bold,” features an alliance between Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian. This means we’ll see four distinct actors portraying Bruce Wayne in DC films this decade!

Despite many unanswered questions about “The Batman Part II”, The Penguin might provide some insights. Although the HBO Max limited series serves as a transitional tale between the two films, it primarily delves deeper into the character of Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb. It’s also plausible that the Joker (not the one portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix) could factor into the sequel, given his hinted appearance at the end of the first movie, suggesting that Barry Keoghan’s Joker might take on a more prominent role as the main antagonist in “The Batman Part II”.

Avengers: Secret Wars

Release Date: May 7, 2027
Directors: The Russo Brothers
Writers: Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely

Characters:

30 years ago, “Secret Wars” by Marvel comics was just as popular, if not more so, as the “Infinity Gauntlet” series. Coming before “Infinity Gauntlet,” “Secret Wars” gathered an unprecedented number of Marvel superheroes and villains. Over twelve issues, it presented a story where the Beyonder transported powerful individuals to a planet from which they couldn’t escape, compelling them to fight each other for his amusement.

In this setup, there’s a chance for virtually every Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero or villain, old and new, to appear in the Secret Wars saga. However, with an abundance of characters already featured across films and Disney Plus series, adding more could become challenging due to the complexity of managing such a large cast, especially with the Fantastic Four set to join the MCU fray.

In this cinematic series, they often alter the original content for a modern fit, so it’s plausible that Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom, will replace Beyonder. As we move closer to the premiere, we can expect more clues about who else might be involved and how a conflict similar to Secret Wars may unfold.

Make it a point to frequently revisit this page for updates on the upcoming superhero movie releases, since additional dates will be disclosed over time.
