Every Jason Statham Sequel, Ranked From Worst To Best

Jason Statham boasts an impressive filmography with a significant number of titles, many of which are sequels that don’t all rank equally in quality. Over the course of his illustrious acting career, the British actor has contributed his distinctive gruff voice and action skills to various franchises, such as the Fast and Furious series, The Expendables, and the Transporter movies.

In Jason Statham’s numerous movies, he often portrays a similar character – a hard-as-nails British outlaw with a casual demeanor and aptitude for physical confrontations. He has gained quite the reputation in his time, appearing in multiple sequels, although not all of them effectively convey his unique blend of gritty action and fantastical violence equally well.

14. Expend4bles

A Disappointing Conclusion To A Tired Franchise

Few movie series deteriorate as much with each subsequent film as people often expect the sequel to be inferior. However, this rule is sometimes broken, and it’s clear that by the time we reached Expendables 4, the once vibrant legacy action franchise had exhausted its potential. It was not only the weakest film in the series but also the most disappointing among Jason Statham’s sequels overall.

Nine years since the last installment in the series, Expend4bles, doesn’t shy away from admitting that the franchise’s initial appeal has significantly diminished. Despite this, it’s undeniable that Jason Statham remains devoted to the films, having stayed on board till the very end.

13. Meg 2: The Trench

At Least Funny In Its Absurdity

In a surprising turn of events, it’s hard to believe that the bold imitator of “Jaws,” released many years after its predecessor, merited a sequel at all. Yet, Jason Statham agreed to rejoin a film series based on the premise of enlarging a man-eating shark through prehistoric means for a follow-up that, ironically, fails spectacularly.

Without a doubt, Meg 2: The Trench deserves recognition for its uproariously idiotic nature, with Statham famously saying “I’ll see you later, buddy” after sending an adversary into a shark’s jaws. However, leaping the shark is just one of the film’s minor concerns, as it showcases a near-impressive zenith of cinematic foolishness.

12. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

A Spin-off Nobody Asked For

In an unexpected twist, the standalone film from the controversial sibling of the Fast & Furious series, titled Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, has garnered criticism even from casual moviegoers. Starring Jason Statham and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a dynamic duo in the role of unlikely partners, this action-packed spinoff finds them working together to defeat Idris Elba’s menacing sci-fi antagonist.

Hobbs & Shaw pushes boundaries too far by venturing into full-blown science fiction realms. Additionally, the duo of Hobbs and Shaw lack the necessary chemistry to carry a lead role convincingly.

11. F9

Represented The Franchise Landing On The Other Side Of The Shark

If “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” marked the shift of the “Fast & Furious” series towards an action spectacle, departing from its roots in grounded street car racing, then “F9” can be seen as the point where they fully embraced this new direction and ceased to pretend that it was anything other than an action franchise. The series reaches unprecedented levels of absurdity with action sequences that seem to have been dreamt up by a child of five years old.

In F9, Statham’s character appears surprisingly ordinary, struggling to fit in as Dom’s team embarks on a journey to actual outer space. Instead of being the point where the series jumped too far, F9 might be the place where it smoothly transitions beyond that mark. A contentious film, F9 carries an uneasy reputation within Statham’s sequel collection.

10. The Expendables 3

The Series’ Attempt To Inject Some Fresh Blood

As a die-hard fan of The Expendables, I noticed that by the third chapter, it was clear the series was starting to lose its initial charm. To breathe new life into it, they brought in a fresh crop of younger action heroes who could keep up with the fast-paced action. Yet, they didn’t forget about their veteran stars, skillfully weaving them into the storyline as well. This time around, the plot revolved around the nefarious backstory of one of the original Expendables’ co-founders.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me express my thoughts on this latest Expendables installment. Jason Statham is noticeably absent from the screen more than usual, and it leaves a void that’s hard to fill. Don’t get me wrong; Antonio Banderas brings an exciting energy to the team, but at times, he can be a bit overwhelming.

However, the real star of the show is Harrison Ford. His performance is nothing short of remarkable, embodying a level of boredom that I’ve never seen before in such a captivating way. It’s truly a sight to behold!

Lastly, the decision to tone down the violence and aim for a PG-13 rating seems like an attempt to broaden the series’ appeal. But personally, I feel it loses some of the raw energy that made this franchise so appealing in the first place.

9. Fast X

Has The Potential To Turn The Series Around

After experiencing some difficulties due to its overly expansive size for a while, Fast X sought to remind fans of the elements they loved from one of the franchise’s most beloved films – Fast & Furious 5. By focusing on a revenge storyline directly following the events of Fast Five, Fast X has the potential to serve as a significant turning point for the entire series.

I must admit, it’s challenging to fully appreciate Fast X based solely on its current state, given that it initiates a sprawling two-part tale. Unfortunately, it seems to be following the overused trend of fragmenting climactic conclusions into separate films, leaving me hanging with an exasperating cliffhanger. However, I can’t deny that the stellar cast, including the likes of Statham and Jason Momoa delivering a captivating villainous performance, makes it an engaging watch.

8. Mechanic: Resurrection

A Fossil Of An Action Movie Struggling To Survive

Mechanic: Resurrection can be seen as another enjoyable, albeit predictable, action flick starring Jason Statham that doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Essentially, it’s more of the same movie, and while it was released in 2016, it doesn’t particularly stand out as a compelling reason for being a sequel.

In an era where movies like John Wick, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation have graced and departed the big screen, a hastily edited action flick such as Mechanic: Resurrection no longer fits seamlessly into the competitive cinematic landscape it now inhabits. The film appears to be an outdated creature, struggling to keep pace with its contemporary counterparts.

7. Transporter 3

A Strange Note To End Statham’s Signature Action Series On

Without a doubt, the original Transporter trilogy showcases Jason Statham as a strong contender for the main role in an action series. By the end of the third movie, though, the franchise seemed to be venturing into bizarre territories for its entertainment. It’s not surprising that Statham decided not to reprise his role in the fourth Transporter film.

In a unique approach, Transporter 3 attempts to introduce characters who develop relationships with each other amidst the action. It subtly portrays these characters’ personalities amidst the film’s frequent bursts of violence. However, it presents these relationships in an unusual manner, with rapid romantic developments that swiftly navigate through the movie’s fast-paced editing style. If you take your eyes off Transporter 3 for even a moment, you might find it difficult to keep up with these sudden changes.

6. The Expendables 2

An Honest Improvement On The Original

It’s uncommon for Jason Statham to appear in a sequel that surpasses the original, but The Expendables 2 does so exceptionally well. The Expendables series wasn’t exactly high-brow to start with, and the sheer fun of watching all action movie legends come together for a brawl reaches its zenith here.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is fantastic as the movie’s antagonist, making every scene his own with a powerful roundhouse kick. The skills of Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis are showcased more effectively here than in the original version, reaching nearly the highest potential that the Expendables series could have ever hoped to achieve.

5. The Fate Of The Furious

Statham’s Best Efforts Lodged In A Middling Fast & Furious Film

Without a doubt, The Fate of the Furious isn’t typically cherished as a Fast & Furious installment, with an over-the-top storyline involving Dom’s dark side and a complex web of a convoluted plot. However, when viewed as a sequel for Jason Statham, it’s challenging to argue that he doesn’t give one of his finest performances in this film, significantly elevating the overall quality of the production.

If F9 marked the point where the series became excessively over-the-top, The Fate of the Furious serves as the tense build-up leading to that jump, culminating in a breathtaking arctic finale that pushed the franchise into the realm of Mission Impossible-esque absurdity. However, the masterstroke of teaming Jason Statham with a baby lends the film an important sense of worth as a significant addition to his acting portfolio.
