Even with a stacked tag team roster, the division needs better booking in WWE

As a lifelong WWE fan who has seen countless highs and lows, I must say that the current state of their tag team divisions leaves me feeling like a kid on Christmas morning with only one present to unwrap – it’s there, but it could be so much more. The potential is undeniable, yet the execution seems to fall short time and time again.

In their latest phase, WWE has been putting in significant work to enhance their tag team segment, including factions. Not long after stepping into this new era, we saw refreshed Tag Team Championships appear, with each brand – Raw and Smackdown – receiving a share. This redesign was hinted as the start of a fresh chapter for the tag team division. On the male side alone, this is the case.

As a passionate fan, I’ve been yearning for more spotlight on the dynamic tag teams in WWE ever since Naomi and Mercedes Mone (formerly Sasha Banks) decided to step away due to the lack of focus on the women’s tag team division. It’s been disappointing to see the potential of both men’s and women’s tag teams not fully realized, especially given the incredible talent we have in these divisions right now. I truly hope that WWE recognizes this untapped potential and gives our tag teams the attention they deserve.

As a long-time WWE fan who has watched and enjoyed the tag team division for years, I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed with the current state of affairs. Having followed the careers of DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) and Finn Balor & JD McDonagh, it’s clear that they are both exceptional teams worthy of showcasing their talents on a bigger stage like SummerSlam.

At the moment, the women’s tag team division in WWE seems to be under the radar, leading many to speculate that we might soon see a women’s trio championship. Currently, Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre hold the Women’s Tag Team Championship, which they successfully defended against Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson at NXT Great American Bash on Tuesday. While this match presented a significant opportunity for Legend and Jackson, it didn’t seem to boost the standing of the champions or the titles themselves. Moreover, the champions have been absent from their own brand Raw for quite some time now.

In terms of determining top contenders, gauntlet matches are an excellent means to highlight the exceptional caliber of today’s tag team division. Across all three brands, these battles never disappoint. However, I propose staging such encounters during Pay-Per-View events (PLE) for a more dramatic impact. With outstanding teams like The Street Profits, DIY, Pretty Deadly, The Bloodline, The Creed Brothers, The Wyatt Family (pick any two), Zoey Stark & Shayna Baszler, Damage CTRL (pick any two), and numerous others, the division is brimming with talent. Unfortunately, the scarcity of storylines isn’t doing justice to this stacked division. I’d argue that the last compelling tag team storyline concluded when The Usos’ reign ended at WrestleMania the previous year.

In the current tag team division, which boasts numerous talented pairs, they merit captivating storylines and increased chances on the PLE’s. This issue has persisted for some time, and despite occasional efforts to rectify it, we seem to keep returning to the same spot. It seems that factions have been receiving more attention recently compared to traditional tag teams. We might be witnessing the emergence of a trios title. If not, it’s crucial for WWE to prioritize this division and offer them more prominent platforms to display their impressive tag team roster.
