Even the Thunderbolts writer didn’t know about dark Taskmaster twist

Thunderbolts* spoilers follow.

Eric Pearson, a collaborator on the screenplay for “Thunderbolts”, admitted that he was unaware of Taskmaster’s outcome until he watched the movie’s initial edit.

In the opening scene of the MCU’s newest release, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) entices Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Yelena (Florence Pugh) and US Agent (Wyatt Russell) to an undisclosed OXE facility. There, she assigns each character a distinct target, ultimately placing them in a situation where they are set against one another.

The only person who succeeds in their mission is Ghost, who shoots Taskmaster in the head.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pearson shared that the most significant alteration from his initial scripts was that Taskmaster no longer “starred in the film,” instead having a different role within it.

Upon catching sight of the initial slice, the most striking transformation was Taskmaster firing that shot, and it left me utterly astonished, as he detailed.

In the drafts, the character Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster was portrayed as if in a film, and she had a minor storyline involving Ava/Ghost.

They had both grown up in laboratories, and Ava took it upon herself to guide her sibling on how to escape their controlled environment and discover individuality.

He added: “However, I can see why they acted that way. Most likely, it was due to the genuine surprise expressed by my audience.

However, everything else was right where I anticipated, and director Jake Schreier explained that their intention was to catch viewers off guard, increase tension, and convey the message: “There’s peril everywhere; no one is secure.

There’s a common perception that they are wicked individuals. However, it’s essential to acknowledge their wrongdoings, as there have been instances showing kindness and compassion from them. Let’s strive to understand their past actions and ensure we know they’ve committed cruel and insensitive acts in their lives.

Previously, director Jake Schreier of Thunderbolts noted that the alteration was implemented to introduce an element of unexpectedness or jolt, ensuring that viewers would think, “If they’re willing to make changes like this, they can pull off anything.
