HGTV’s The Flip Off is a house-flipping competition, but many viewers who watched the first season in 2025 were more interested in the show’s unusual setup. It was entertaining to see Christina Haack working with her three former husbands, but the friendship between Haack and Heather Rae El Moussa was equally captivating – even Tarek El Moussa didn’t predict that connection.
Tarek El Moussa started dating Heather Rae in 2019, three years after splitting from his Flip or Flop co-star Christina Haack. It wasn’t always the smoothest road — and they still can’t quite tell you how all of their kids are related — but they’ve settled into a really healthy co-parenting situation. However, El Moussa lamented the unexpected side effect of having his wife become friends with his ex-wife, as he posted on Instagram:

Before the second season of The Flip Off (thank you, HGTV, for bringing it back!), the show emphasized how much Christina Haack and Heather Rae El Moussa resemble each other. However, their connection goes beyond just looks; they have a genuine friendship.
The mothers share a respectful relationship, prioritizing their children above all else, and both the El Moussas offered Christina Haack support during her divorce from Josh Hall. They also seem to connect over their experiences with Tarek, even joking about his bedtime habits. Tarek himself admitted he was surprised by this unexpected bonding, as he mentioned in a post saying:
How did I not see this coming…🧐😂 & now they like to gang up against me! 😅
Perhaps he could try to get Christina Haack’s boyfriend, Chris Larocca, on his side, but that seems unlikely. However, Tarek El Moussa – and likely many HGTV viewers – would say the same about the women’s friendship; they probably didn’t expect it either.
Heather Rae still feels thankful for their relationship, even though not everyone understands it. What I find surprising isn’t that the stars of Selling Sunset and Christina on the Coast are friendly, but how she manages to deal with the constant arguments between her husband and his ex-wife while they’re filming The Flip Off.
You know, I was watching Season 1, and Heather described her friend group so perfectly. She said she’s always stuck playing peacemaker because they bicker constantly – like a real family, she put it. It totally resonated with me; sibling-like dynamics can be so intense, but also, you love them anyway!

HBO Max offers streaming access to shows like The Flip Off and a wide variety of other HGTV series. Subscriptions start at $10.99 per month (with ads) and include thousands of movies, shows, documentaries, and more. See the deal here.
It might be good TV, but I wouldn’t want my husband behaving that way. Perhaps that explains why Heather Rae sides with Christina when they both confront Tarek.
It’s always entertaining to watch the competition on their HGTV show, and I can’t wait to see who wins their next face-off. Season 2 of The Flip Off is scheduled for 2026, but you can catch Season 1 – and many other HGTV favorites – by streaming with your HBO Max subscription.
