George Clooney doesn’t hide his feelings about Batman & Robin. He’s often talked about the 1997 film, and famously told Howard Stern in 2020 that it was so bad, it was painful to watch.
I recently heard that George Clooney was telling a funny story about his son, Alexander! Apparently, Alexander, who’s eight years old along with his twin sister Ella, playfully teased George about his work in the ‘Batman’ movies. It was all innocent, of course – he didn’t realize he was making fun of his dad!
In a recent interview with MovieWeb to promote his new film, Jay Kelly, George Clooney was asked if there was any of his past work he’d like to revisit.

“Batman & Robin!” he said with a laugh. Apparently, his son had dressed up as Batman for Halloween, but hadn’t seen the movie. When the father jokingly told him he was Batman, his son playfully dismissed it, saying, “Not really.” The father responded, “You’re more right than you know!”
Despite costing a reported $160 million to make, the movie Batman & Robin wasn’t successful in theaters. Both critics and audiences disliked it when it first came out. Today, it has a very low score of 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, and in 2010, readers of Empire magazine voted it the worst movie ever made (according to The Guardian).

Clooney has openly discussed how the movie’s poor performance changed his career. In a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he was asked to identify the film that most shaped his approach to acting.
Look, if you ask me the biggest turning point in my career, it’s gotta be Batman & Robin. Seriously, it wasn’t a joke how badly that one flopped. Before that, I was just happy to be working, taking whatever roles came my way. But after that film, I realized I needed to be way more involved in choosing projects – not just playing the character, but actually having a say in the whole thing. That’s why my next three movies – Out of Sight, Three Kings, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? – were so different, and honestly, a lot more me.

George Clooney has shared that many of his colleagues on the set of Batman & Robin also disliked the film. He admitted on The Howard Stern Show that he wasn’t good in it, and that the script, written by Akiva Goldsman (who later won an Oscar for his writing), was simply bad – a sentiment Goldsman himself acknowledges.
I wasn’t good in that movie, and honestly, it just didn’t come together. Joel Schumacher, who recently passed away, even admitted it wasn’t a success. We all felt like it missed the mark.
