Even 20 years after ‘The Office’ premiere, Jim and Pam still make us swoon

The memorabilia that Jenna Fischer saved during her time creating the popular sitcom “The Office,” which first aired on NBC twenty years ago, are now priceless relics of a treasured era, forever safeguarded for future generations through their presence on screen.

In the revamped version of a British series originally produced by Ricky Gervais, Fischer took on the role of Pam Beasley, a warm-hearted and feisty receptionist who harbored creative ambitions.

During our latest Zoom chat, I enquired from Fischer about the teapot that clever Jim Halpert (portrayed by John Krasinski), known for his quick wit, had thoughtfully gifted to Pam in the initial season of the series as a heartfelt secret Santa present.

John claimed the teapot! That seems odd, but I’m heading to another part of the room to pick up my Dundies,” the actress remarks, referring to the awards Michael Scott (Steve Carell), the regional manager at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, bestowed upon Pam.

Fischer possesses both the Dundie Awards for Longest Engagement and Whitest Sneakers. He has preserved a number of items, including one of Pam’s sweaters, one of her shirts, her watch, her purse, and the necklace she wore at Jim and Pam‘s wedding.

This collection continues, and each trinket within it – such as a medal crafted from a yogurt container lid and paper clips used in the “Office Olympics” episode – serves as a palpable memento of just how meaningful this timeframe still is to Fischer.

I took the pen from her desk, though it doesn’t function. Still, I held onto it. It’s a memento that survived an accident, like this cup here. This cup was Pam’s prop in the series, and in season nine, it fell off the set and shattered. The crew knew my affection for it and repaired it for me. Although I can’t use it, I possess it.

In an intimate email exchange, I (a devoted fan) unveil the behind-the-scenes tale of how John Krasinski, in his character as Jim, managed to acquire the distinctive teal teapot, a cherished emblem of the remarkable bond shared by Pam and myself (Jim).

Krasinski admits that she tattled on him, but he has the teapot – quite a significant keepsake for him, he acknowledges. He explains that the prop master Phil Shea unexpectedly sent him a box of props after the project had ended.

But just like Fischer, that’s not the only “Office” keepsake in his possession.

[Phil delivered] items he believed I’d appreciate, and they were like a priceless treasure trove, containing my show bag, my desk nameplate, and even a copy of ‘The Adventures of Jim Halpert’ comic book,” Krasinski mentioned.

Jeffrey Blitz discusses his role in directing the Emmy-winning ‘The Office’ episode ‘Stress Relief,’ the intricacies of performing cat tricks, and comedian Cloris Leachman’s dedication towards her profession.

Apart from their practical uses, these items serve as reminders of the close bonds formed among the cast and crew throughout the series. Following Shea’s demise in 2023, Fischer stated that everyone gathered for his memorial service. She further added that they keep in touch regularly: “We have a group text similar to ‘The Office.’ We receive emails from Greg Daniels, and it’s an extraordinary group of individuals who share a unique bond, one that will last a lifetime.

Initially, as far back as 2005, none of the production team could have foreseen the success that the show would eventually achieve. However, Krasinski recalls clearly when he came to understand that “The Office” was going to be his big break. The actor, who hadn’t yet relocated to Los Angeles during seasons due to uncertainty about the show’s future, explains that the moment is etched in his memory.

In New York, I happened to be walking down the street when someone looked at me, removed his earphones, and exclaimed, “Hey, you’re on my iPod!” He then displayed it for me to see. At that instant, I believe my mind momentarily stopped functioning due to shock. Firstly, I was struggling to understand what an iPod even was since they were newly released. Secondly, on the small screen of his device, my likeness was visible. I remember thinking that things had suddenly taken a drastic turn for the unexpected.

Ever since the finale of that beloved series back in 2013, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by John Krasinski’s remarkable journey into film directing, particularly with the “A Quiet Place” movies. Furthermore, it’s fascinating to witness his continued growth as an actor too.

Reflecting on it now, he still can’t entirely grasp why “The Office” became such a significant part of popular culture. “We’re all astonished by its enduring appeal,” Krasinski remarks.

Fischer thinks one cause the series remains relevant over the years is that its relationships are designed to seem genuine, regardless of the environment, not only for people with office jobs.

Fischer notes that our fan base consists mainly of young individuals who haven’t worked in an office yet and are still studying. He suggests that some workplace dynamics may resemble school relationships for them, such as being seated next to someone who irritates you or having a teacher who tries to be funny.

According to Fischer, one reason viewers are still captivated by Pam and Jim’s love story is due to the show’s mockumentary style, which allowed for the portrayal of “private moments” where characters let their guards down. She explains that watching a romance develop in this way has a powerful emotional impact, as it resonates deeply with the audience. This kind of authentic romance isn’t often depicted in films or television shows.

Contrary to some speculations that arose over the past few months, it turned out that Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott on “The Office”, did indeed attend the series finale. This was something that never seemed uncertain or doubtful in the first place.

Primarily, she believes, it’s the shared desire among spectators for the characters to acknowledge their feelings towards each other that resonates so strongly. After all, the deep affection they have for one another is something many individuals aspire to experience themselves.

Fischer states that it’s common to wish you could find and marry your best friend, someone who looks at you with the same deep affection Jim has for Pam or vice versa during their early seasons. He emphasizes that we capture a lot of their yearning for each other in those early episodes, as everyone desires to be desired in the way they desire each other.

As a devoted fan, I must say that it’s delightful to see Mindy Fischer, who charmed us as Pam Beesly on Dunder Mifflin, hasn’t ventured too far from our cherished Scranton branch. In the year 2019, she and her fellow castmate, Angela Kinsey, who brought Angela Martin to life, embarked upon a fascinating journey together with the launch of their podcast, “Office Ladies.” Over the past five years, they’ve revisited each of the series’ 201 episodes, offering heartwarming, insider tales from behind the scenes.

She expressed a wish to repay the fans since we couldn’t offer additional episodes. In lieu of that, we thought we could provide fresh perspectives instead. Additionally, it served as a means to acknowledge and appreciate the tireless efforts of our team whose contributions were invaluable.

As a devoted cinephile, diving back into past experiences opened up a fresh chance for me to collaborate with Kinsey once more. “One of life’s most treasured blessings was discovering my closest companion on this show,” I reflect. “Each day at work felt like spending time with someone I trust implicitly and deeply cherish.

Despite primarily filming their show in Los Angeles, these two friends intend to travel to Scranton, Pennsylvania for a unique episode of their podcast. During this trip, they’ll explore significant locations from the show such as the city hall statue of a giant Dundie and Cooper’s Seafood House.

As a film enthusiast looking back on my journey, I’ve never harbored mixed feelings about being forever linked to a successful project. You see, when I swapped the tranquil streets of St. Louis for the bustling L.A. scene in the late ’90s, my dream was to become part of an enduring ensemble comedy show. Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to say that ambition has been more than fulfilled.

After nine years on the air, the unique sitcom, which is a reboot of a popular British show, will come to an end. For many viewers, it has been essential viewing, not to be missed.

Currently, Fisher has added “bestselling author” to her list of achievements due to the success of her book “The Office BFFs: Tales of ‘The Office’ From Two Best Friends Who Were There,” co-authored with Kinsey. To top it off, their podcast has been a resounding success since its launch.

In time, when her children grow up, Fischer plans to delve deeper into theater. Even if her past television role from a series that concluded years ago was the extent of her acting career, it would still bring her contentment.

John Fischer expresses his gratitude by saying, “I aimed to portray a character that resonated deeply with audiences, and I achieved this through Pam and ‘The Office.’ How many chances do I get like this? He adds, “It wouldn’t fill me with greater pride if I am forever associated with being Pam Beasley.

To put it simply, Fischer believes that the show shouldn’t return, not even if it could gather the cast again. She feels that the characters have moved on from Dunder Mifflin, making it difficult to reunite them convincingly.

Initially, I was among those advocating for a return and revival of the series, she admits. However, after watching it again, I feel it’s best to keep things as they are. I don’t believe we should restart the production.

Naturally, fans remain eager to know what happened to the characters they’ve closely followed over time. When questioned about whether Jim and Pam are still a couple in the “The Office” world as we know it today, Krasinski responds confidently with warmth.

He mentioned that they indeed own an appealing home, situated just beyond Austin. It seems they’ve been delighting in rearing their children there. As for Pam, she’s discovered a vibrant artistic community at UT. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were out on a romantic evening right now, perhaps grabbing takeout from Whataburger and enjoying it in the park near the bridge, anticipating the bats to emerge.
