As a survivor of sexual assault, I wholeheartedly support Ronan Farrow for calling out the normalization of rape jokes and the disregard for women’s experiences. Her courage to speak out about her own traumatic past serves as an inspiration for countless others who have faced similar hardships. The power dynamics that allow such jokes to persist are deeply troubling, and it is essential that we challenge them whenever they rear their ugly heads.

On Monday night, Eve Hewson publicly endorsed fellow actress Saoirse Ronan, whose ten-word statement about woman abuse gained significant attention online.

Women worldwide are praising Ronan for voicing her strong opinions following her assertive intervention on The Graham Norton Show, where she effectively highlighted the issue of gender-based violence by momentarily silencing her co-guests.

30-year-old actress of American birth but Irish descent, who was part of the family earlier, made the gentlemen on an all-male panel, comprising Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, and Eddie Redmayne, shift uncomfortably when she pointedly criticized a humorous comment about self-defense.

In response to the viral incident on Instagram, Hewson (daughter of U2 singer Bono and his activist spouse Ali Hewson) shared the cringe-worthy instance with her 440,000 followers by re-posting it.

Previously, the Irish actress (age 33) acknowledged that Ronan, who is younger by three years, served as a source of motivation for her to enter the movie world at a young age.

In an interview with Wonderland magazine in 2021, she recollected feeling starstruck when encountering Jamie Dornan at the Oscars, expressing something along the lines of, “We’re just thrilled to be here.

She hails from Bray, as far as I know, which made the spectacle quite thrilling. Plus, I recall spotting Cillian Murphy, who’s previously collaborated with directors like Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan, even in Batman productions.

‘Those kind of people were in and around my life, so yeah, they would be big inspirations.’

Ronan’s popular moment arose when Redmayne, aged 42, shared a tale regarding his preparation for The Day Of The Jackal, where he learned how to utilize a phone as a means of counterattack if faced with an assault.

Breaking out in laughter, Mescal, aged 28, jokingly commented: ‘Who would even consider that at such a moment? If someone were attacking me, I wouldn’t be thinking about reaching for my phone.’

In jest, as Norton, aged 61, feigned the use of a phone to ward off an imaginary attacker, he quipped, “Hold on a moment,” to which Redmayne replied, “Indeed, that’s a clever idea.

However, the merriment came to an abrupt halt as Ronan, aged thirty, interjected into the conversation on the couch, stating, “That’s something women often ponder regularly.

The brutally honest comment prompted a moment of silence from the panel.

She posed a question to the group, “Is that correct?” and was met with a thunderous applause from the audience in the studio.

Ronan, expressing her interest in portraying a Bond villain, has garnered widespread admiration for her efforts in emphasizing women’s security through her interjections.

Madeleine Black, an advocate for combating sexual violence, spoke to TopMob, expressing that it’s common to feel fear: ‘Are we going to make it home safely? Are we secure? It’s unfortunate that such concerns need to be addressed. She [Ronan] was the sole female participant on that panel.’

The quietness implies they were unsure about their next move, causing discomfort which, in my opinion, is fitting since it mirrors the reality for numerous women.

The quietness seems to indicate that the male performers were unsure of their next steps, causing them discomfort. Frankly, I believe this unease is fitting, given that such situations often resonate with the experiences of numerous women.

Black, who has earlier narrated her experience of being raped at 13 in her memoir titled Unbroken, further expressed: ‘I believe when men make light of such incidents, it diminishes their gravity. It strips off the solemnity that women encounter every day. It undermines it.’

‘I think it’s always important to call it out whenever we hear things like that for the women listening as well, because it obviously resonated because it’s gone so viral with so many women. It’s just a normality. It’s part of our normal life.

‘Victim-blaming and the acceptance of rape culture are all too common in society, and when we make light of such issues, it diminishes the gravity of our own experiences. It’s crucial that we voice our concerns and invite men to join us as allies in this fight against victim-blaming and promoting a culture that respects all individuals.’

At present, Ronan is actively publicizing her upcoming war drama movie titled Blitz. The film is scheduled for a theater release on November 1, followed by its debut on Apple TV+ on November 22.
