Euphoria Finally Confirms Plans for Season 3 Production. Here’s Why It’s Taken So Long

As a dedicated fan of Euphoria, I can’t help but be in awe of the extraordinary experiences and accomplishments of the show’s talented cast members since the second season wrapped up. Their meteoric rise to fame is truly inspiring, and it’s a testament to their exceptional acting abilities that they have become household names in Hollywood.

Enthusiasts of “Euphoria” have been eagerly anticipating the comeback of this acclaimed HBO show. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, production is set to resume in January 2025, marking a three-year hiatus since the second season debuted. Notably, the principal cast members are expected to rejoin the project following their professional growth since their last appearance on the series. Hunter Schafer, Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney are all slated to return to the show that significantly contributed to their early successes.

The return date for the show on TV screens is still uncertain. There were initial plans for it to come back next year, according to reliable sources who spoke to THR. However, production has been paused indefinitely. As per THR’s report, the upcoming season is expected to feature a leap in time and depict the characters post-high school.

Euphoria, an exceptionally successful series, rarely experiences such lengthy breaks between seasons, more so after being renewed during its previous run. Yet, the making of this acclaimed TV show encountered numerous challenges. Let’s explore the possible factors contributing to this production delay.

The writers and actors strikes

Last summer, as a movie enthusiast, I witnessed an unprecedented standoff between Hollywood’s powerhouses. The Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA united in their quest for improved protections and working conditions, leading to a labor strike that brought film production to a grinding halt. The unions valiantly battled for a fair agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Consequently, union members ceased work for affected studios until a ratified contract was secured. Regrettably, my beloved show “Euphoria” wasn’t in production during this time. However, it’s safe to assume that the strikes did not expedite the arrival of a new season.

The actors finding major success outside of the show

As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share my perspective on how the principal cast of “Euphoria” have made a significant impact in Hollywood after the second season. For instance, Zendaya has truly shined and transformed into a major movie star. Following her first Emmy win in 2020 for her exceptional performance as the lead actress, she’s been unstoppable. Her name is now synonymous with the new Hollywood elite.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m always excited to see new faces gracing the silver screen. One rising star, Hunter Schafer, has been making waves in the fashion world but is now dipping her toes into acting. She recently appeared in the newest installment of “The Hunger Games” franchise and Yorgos Lanthimos’ film, “Kinds of Kindness.” In August, you can catch her in a horror movie called “Cuckoo.” Sydney Sweeney has already found success with the charming romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” where she starred alongside Glen Powell. And let me tell you, Jacob Elordi is definitely one to watch. He’s currently leading in Emerald Fennell’s film “Saltburn” and portraying Elvis in Sofia Coppola’s upcoming production, “Priscilla.”

Angus Cloud’s death

In July 2023, unfortunately, actor Elias “Cloud” Harden, known for his role as Fezco in Euphoria, passed away due to an unintentional drug overdose. Cloud had a long-standing battle with substance abuse and was reportedly helped by Euphoria’s creator Sam Levinson and HBO. According to Levinson, who spoke with People, he urged Cloud to seek treatment in rehab. “I really enjoyed working with you, and we have an incredible season coming up,” Levinson stated in the interview. “But I need you sober so I can rely on you.” HBO covered the cost of his rehabilitation. The loss of a vital cast member not only caused deep sadness among the team but also brought new hurdles to the production process.

Controversy on set of The Idol

In March of 2023, I supported the creation of “The Idol,” a new HBO series by Levinson following the success of “Euphoria.” However, things took an unexpected turn when controversy hit the production. An investigative piece by Rolling Stone revealed that the show, featuring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd in lead roles, was originally intended to be a feminist critique of Hollywood’s darker side.

One report attributed The Weeknd, whose genuine name is Abel Tesfaye, with desiring to “dampen the cult-like angle of the narrative and shift towards something new, consequently abandoning the ‘feminist perspective’ used in telling the story.” As reported in Rolling Stone, Levinson’s adaptation of the series was more disturbing than the initial version. It contained explicit sex scenes that were characterized as “sexual torture porn.”

Despite appearing unfazed by the critiques, the reception for Tesfaye’s show didn’t surpass the negative feedback preceding it.

Barbie Ferreira’s supposed fallout with Levinson

A reported disagreement between Barbie Ferreira, portraying Kat Hernandez, and show creator Sam Levinson, cast a shadow over “Euphoria.” In August 2022, Ferreira revealed she wouldn’t rejoin the series for its third season. Previously, gossip swirled that she had left the set following an on-camera spat with Levinson. On Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, however, Ferreira debunked those tales, stating instead that she had sprained her ankle and required an x-ray examination.

She explained that while she and Levinson agreed it was time for her character to depart from the show, as they both believed her storyline had reached its limit. “I believe there were possibilities for her development, but they didn’t align with the direction of the series,” she stated during the podcast interview. “Neither of us wanted me to continue being the overweight sidekick, and it seemed neither did the production team.”
