Eugene and Dan Levy get the 2024 Emmys started with a monologue that is Canadian nice

As a lifelong admirer of the arts and comedy, I must say that the Levy duo at this year’s Emmy Awards was nothing short of delightful! Their father-son dynamic, coupled with their witty banter, made for an engaging and entertaining opening act.

Leave it to Canadians to kick off an awards show with pleasant zingers.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I took my seat at the Peacock theater last Sunday for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. The evening was kicked off by none other than the delightful father-son duo, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who were making their hosting debut. With an air of warmth and a touch of wit, they began the show with jovial jokes and affectionate banter. As the creators and stars of “Schitt’s Creek,” they gracefully acknowledged that while they were thrilled to be there, neither of them can claim the title of stand-up comedian.

Dan Levy himself admitted, “To be honest, I wouldn’t classify us as traditional hosts.” Instead, he described their roles as “actors playing the part of hosts,” which carries a significant risk for them. However, if tonight turns out to be successful, remember that my name is pronounced ‘Levy’ [leh-vee], not ‘Levy’ [Lee-vee].

“And if things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short,” added Eugene Levy.

Clearly, they couldn’t resist a playful banter: Eugene teased that receiving an Emmy for “Schitt’s Creek” was the best part about being Daniel’s father, and Daniel good-naturedly mocked his father’s poor texting abilities.

Additionally, the Levys didn’t shy away from criticizing the nominated programs, the Television Academy, and the broader entertainment industry in Hollywood.

Speaking enthusiastically about “The Bear’s” many accolades, Eugene Levy emphasized its recognition as a humorous television series.

Levy expressed his fondness for the series, acknowledging that some viewers may anticipate a humorous comment on whether ‘The Bear’ is indeed a comedy. However, staying true to the essence of ‘The Bear,’ we won’t be adding any comedic elements to our discussion.

Instead, let me rephrase it for you: Dan Levy criticized the practice of casting non-LGBTQ+ actors in significant roles in Hollywood’s high-profile productions, which portray LGBTQ+ characters.

Dan Levy acknowledged that both Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer were honored for their portrayals as lovers in ‘Fellow Travelers.’ He emphasized that acting roles portraying same-sex relationships are not exclusive to actors who identify as LGBTQ+.

Before the broadcast, the Levys shared with The Times that they wanted the show to have a festive atmosphere, but also include a touch of something bold or edgy.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel an infectious enthusiasm about our comedic style. Unlike some other acts, we aim to bring a warm and inviting atmosphere rather than a harsh edge. Dan Levy expressed this sentiment when he said, “Folks seem quite excited that we’re not your typical hard-edged comics.” In line with this, Eugene Levy added, “We want it to be funny, but perhaps a more compassionate and gentle approach is our style of choice.
