Ethan Hawke shares insights into his romantic history with former spouse Uma Thurman, discussing the intense and potentially risky connection they experienced during filming.
In 1998, the once prominent pair from the Hollywood scene got married, having first met while working together on the science fiction movie “Gattaca” back in 1996.
However, the pair’s relationship fell apart in 2003 amid rumours that he was unfaithful.
54-year-old Ethan opened up to GQ, sharing insightful reflections on the powerful emotions experienced during their joint film project, regarding their tragic love narrative.
‘Have you ever played Spin the Bottle?’ he said, when asked why actors often fall in love on set.
In a distinctive manner, our work possesses an intimate, imaginative quality that brings about a unique sensation – almost like an exhilarating high. This experience carries undertones of danger and excitement, elevating the ordinary to something extraordinary within one’s life.

I shared: “It feels akin to experiencing the rush of summer camp romance, separate from everyday routines. That’s the potential pitfall – its disconnection from reality.
As a devoted admirer, I might say: Four times an Oscar nominee I’ve been, sharing two beautiful children, Maya, age 27, and Levon, aged 23, with Uma, now 55. Unfortunately, during our separation, whispers of infidelity surrounded our story.
He had been accused of cheating on Uma with their children’s nanny Ryan Shawhughes.
After his divorce from Uma was finalized in 2005, the actor who starred in “Training Day” admitted to starting a public relationship with Shawhughes, despite previously denying any affair with her.
In the year 2008, Ethan and Ryan tied the knot, and now they are proud parents to two girls – Clementine, aged 17, and Indiana, who is 14 years old.
He mentioned during his chat with GQ that he had just left a parent-teacher meeting and pondered, “You don’t initially realize how fleeting parenthood can be. I’m making an effort not to miss any moments.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in October 2005, shortly after her divorce, Uma confessed that her self-worth suffered significant damage as a result.
She characterized the whole experience as incredibly painful and confessed that even two years post-separation, maintaining communication with Hawke remained quite challenging for her.
Uma didn’t provide evidence to support the rumors about an affair, yet hinted at some form of deceit or dishonesty happening within their relationship instead.

Previously, Ethan acknowledged that his life unraveled after the divorce from Uma. In 2018, he mentioned that due to alimony payments, he was compelled to work on commercially-backed films.
He mentioned that the divorce occurred only a year following his initial Oscar nomination for Training Day, an event he referred to as the pinnacle of his professional journey.
He mused that it potentially marked the start of something significant. Perhaps, just perhaps, it might have proven profitable for you.
‘But I got divorced and my personal life fell apart.’
He went on to say, ‘When you’re feeling down, it becomes quite simple to perceive the insincerity in others and life itself. I began noticing this deception everywhere – even in celebrities and various aspects of life. It’s as if you adopt a Holden Caulfield-like perspective.’
In the interview, Ethan emphasized that he has never sought to create films solely for financial gain; on the contrary, his passion remains untainted. Yet, he acknowledged that due to his financial obligations like paying alimony, he’s been compelled to work on commercially successful movies.
He stated that his favorite films aren’t necessarily the ones that offered him the highest paychecks; instead, they include ‘The Before Trilogy’, ‘Boyhood’, ‘First Reformed’, and ‘Dead Poets Society’.
I’m 47 years old, and I support myself through acting. My acting pays for my children’s health insurance, their tuition, and I also use it to help various charities.
Initially, I wasn’t aiming for a professional career, but circumstances led me to it. Now, the truth is, I find myself growing weary of individuals labeled as ‘professionals’.
