Once more, let’s dive into the discussion! This week, it’s all about ‘The Last of Us‘, focusing particularly on the characters, Joel and Ellie.
As the return of “The Last of Us” with Season 2 on HBO, there have been numerous alterations and instances that have genuinely set this season apart. From the memorable second episode’s tragic death to Jesse’s entrance in Seattle, to Jackson assuming a more significant role within the series, there has been an abundance of noteworthy moments worth appreciating.
Nevertheless, one aspect that has remained quite consistent is the exceptional bond between Joel and Ellie, and the series only manages to make it even more captivating.
Joel And Ellie’s Story Has Always Been Great
I have a predilection for recognizing familiar storylines in movies or TV shows swiftly because I’m quite straightforward in my preferences. One recurring trope that consistently catches my attention is when a gruff character assumes a nurturing role and grows to care deeply for the young protagonist, often more than their own life. Despite its frequent appearance, I can’t resist this heartwarming narrative.
Yet, Joel and Ellie feel incredibly real to me, and they’ve easily become my top picks among all characters I’ve encountered in the games. Over time, my appreciation for them has only deepened. The on-screen dynamic between Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey significantly enhances their relationship in the show, yet it was already remarkable. Their interaction sparkles with an exceptional chemistry.
But, the latest episode really took it to another level, and I have to talk about it.

But That Moment Of His Backstory Added So Much
In the “The Last of Us” games, Joel’s backstory was never fully explored. Not in the first game nor in Part 2. Given the narrative flow, it seemed like a missed opportunity to delve into his past. However, the brief flashback scene showing him with his father and his father expressing hope that Joel would be a better father one day, really packed an emotional punch.
In my opinion, Pascal is not just like the game’s Joel, but rather, he surpasses him in a way that resonates deeply. This is due to the fact that we are granted a glimpse into the raw emotion and profound love he holds for Ellie, as well as the anguish underlying his actions and tough choices. Moreover, the backstory of his abusive father adds depth and significance to his portrayal.

Joel’s Reaction To Ellie Growing Up And Rebelling Made Their Porch Scene Hit That Much Harder
Additionally, experiencing Ellie’s growth throughout is another significant part. The game does provide flashbacks, such as her birthday scene featured in the series, but not as extensively as portrayed on television. In the game, we witnessed Joel transform into a father figure once more, open himself up to vulnerability, and develop a deep, paternal love for Ellie that lasted until his final moments.
We observed him witness her transform from a child into a teenager, eventually maturing into a young woman. We saw her struggle with self-acceptance and personal growth. We witnessed his regrettable decisions that caused a rift between them. We were privy to it all. And finally, we saw him declare, “I love you.
Joel never said “I love you” in the games.
When I shared my feelings about it, I couldn’t help but tear up profusely. Yes, I did. What their relationship evoked in me was something I didn’t realize I yearned for. I thought the games had managed to scratch that itch, but this show surpassed all expectations. Now, without a doubt, it stands as one of the finest video game adaptations ever made. The way they amplified and analyzed the characters’ traits, crafting them into a captivating narrative, leaves me spellbound with no room for criticism.
I only wish I had more time with these two.
It’s been confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 will indeed happen, and the Ellie vs Abby saga will carry on. However, I’ll really miss those moments with Joel. If Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of him truly comes to an end…well, what a rollercoaster ride it’s been, and thank you for managing to make me adore these characters even more.
