Coronation Street and Doctor Who star Michael McStay has died aged 92.

He is survived by his wife, the actress Jennifer Clulow, and their two sons Darius and Paul.

On Tuesday, it was officially announced by a spokesperson that a British actor, whose acting career extended across stages, screens, and radios for more than six decades, had passed away.

Michael unfortunately succumbed to a heart issue, yet found tranquility in his passing, as it occurred during his sleep following a peaceful Sunday meal shared with his sons.

I am regretfully compelled to share this heartfelt announcement: Michael McStay, a renowned actor and gifted wordsmith, has departed from our world. With a career that traversed the stages, screens, and airwaves for an impressive span of six decades, his artistic impact will forever be indelible in our collective memory.

Michael initially gained recognition through the show titled “No Hiding Place,” followed by numerous film roles such as Peter Yates’ production “Robbery” and television series like “Doctor Who,” “Blunt,” and “Thatcher: The Last Days.

In 2011, his most recent on-screen appearance was on Coronation Street, assuming the role of Alan Hoyle from John Woodvine. There, he reconnected with his longtime friend, who portrayed the character of Alec Briggs. (Note: It is important to mention that Alec Briggs is not played by Alec Baldwin in this context.)

He also wrote numerous plays for Radio 4 and the popular 1984 ITV comedy Pull the Other One.

Upon hearing about his passing, a fan expressed their sorrow on social media platform X: ‘It’s sad to learn that Michael McStay is no longer with us. He was brilliantly loved for his role as Alan Hoyle in the John Stape storyline on Corrie.’

‘Both him and the late Jean Fergusson were brilliant in the basement episode.’

Previously, I had the incredible opportunity to personally meet Michael, and I decided to share a fresh picture of him on social media for all his fans to enjoy.

‘Yesterday, I encountered Michael McStay once more, and at 91 years old, he was just as sharp and entertaining to converse with as someone much younger.’

‘He is well-recognized for his role as Moberley in Doctor Who: The Seeds of Doom (1976). Additionally, he has appeared in The Avengers and The Persuaders! as well.’

Michael also recorded audio books and appeared in numerous radio plays over the years.

In addition, he spent some time in France where he played a role in thirteen one-hour episodes of the TV series “Le Mari de L’Ambassadeur,” produced by Koba Films. These episodes were aired during peak television hours on Antenne 2.

Michael pursued a three-year course in Drama, French, and Philosophy at the University of Bristol, focusing on these subjects during his studies.

Afterward, he served two years in the National Service as an officer stationed in Cyprus, which was during a state of emergency known as the Cyprus Crisis. Later, he returned to England to start his acting profession.

He married actress Jennifer in 1967, herself a rising star of the time.

Jennifer is best know for her roles in The Avengers, Keeping Up Appearances, and No Hiding Place.

From 1974 to 1988, Clulow starred in a sequence of TV ads for Cointreau, portraying an English woman named Catherine who engaged in romantic banter with a French man (Christian Toma) about post-meal liqueurs.

In the latter part of his life, Michael was often referred to by his inner circle as a storyteller and jokester, but he grew increasingly private.

In my perspective as a lifestyle guide, one could say that his writings consistently radiated a ‘subtle yet resilient positivity towards life.’ During a chat on Toby Hadoke’s Happy Times and Places Podcast, he shared some insights about his professional journey drawing to a close.

When inquired about whether he regretted not landing the James Bond role, he responded negatively because he cherished his loving family more than any worldwide success, as his son Darius disclosed.
