The majority of male characters in the television series Mad Men engaged in extramarital affairs frequently, with Pete Campbell being one of the most notorious offenders, constantly betraying beloved character Trudy. Some of these attempts to be unfaithful were successful, while others ended in failure. Pete was a character that viewers often disliked, and the show would have been less captivating without Vincent Kartheiser’s portrayal. Although Don Draper had numerous mistresses, Pete also had his fair share of indiscretions.

Pete Campbell was one of the liveliest members on the Sterling-Cooper team, and it was always amusing to watch him suffer for his arrogance. In the initial season of “Mad Men,” I found myself in a romantic entanglement with Peggy, portrayed by Elisabeth Moss from the series, not once but twice. The first encounter took place in the pilot episode, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.” During her first day at work, I was less than courteous towards her, displaying my sense of privilege. Later on, following my bachelor party, I ended up at Peggy’s apartment and we shared a night together. The second instance occurred in episode 8, “The Hobo Code,” where we found ourselves on an office sofa, having crossed paths early for work. This rendezvous took place amidst the bustling atmosphere of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

Unlike Pete’s other romantic entanglements, the one with Peggy had significant repercussions. Early in the first season, viewers see Peggy visiting a doctor to get a birth control pill prescription, following advice from Joan. However, during her affair with Pete, she hadn’t been on the pill for long enough for it to be fully effective. Nine months later, Peggy discovers she is pregnant when she gives birth to a baby boy. In ‘Mad Men’, Peggy didn’t realize she was pregnant because of a mix of weight gain, a sheltered upbringing, and intense denial.

6. The Au Pair

Season 3

In the TV series Mad Men, one particularly disturbing incident involving Pete is when he has an affair with Gudrun, a German au pair from a neighbor’s household. This act ranks among the most questionable actions Pete Campbell undertook throughout the show. Interestingly, as revealed by actor Vincent Kartheiser in The Wall Street Journal, the coercive nature of the scene was not explicitly written into the script; instead, Gudrun’s character was intended to reciprocate the kiss. Whether or not it was intentional, the scene appears nonconsensual and is undeniably uncomfortable to watch, adding to the list of memorable yet troubling Pete moments.

In addition, there’s a power dynamic at play during their interaction, as Pete has assisted the au pair in fixing a torn dress. He believes he’s entitled to a reward for this act. Sadly, Gudrun resigns due to Pete’s actions. This unfolds while Trudy is absent in the third season episode “Souvenir”, highlighting Pete’s increasingly problematic behavior by involving himself with someone so closely connected to the family.

5. A Fellow Driver’s Ed Student

Among all episodes from Mad Men’s fifth season, “Signal 30” stands out as one I found particularly captivating. The episode was a masterpiece, with its profoundly symbolic scripting skillfully directed by John Slattery, earning it high praise from critics. This instalment serves as a poignant portrayal of Pete Campbell’s gradual emasculation and the culmination of his inner struggles.

In the beginning of the episode, Pete believes he has mended a leaking faucet, but later, it bursts – a symbolic representation of his failures in both his personal and professional life. In this instance, the character of Don Draper steps in as a sort of Superman figure, underscoring Pete’s shortcomings even further.

In the storyline of Pete, the premonition made by Don earlier, “no one will like you,” becomes a reality. Lane labels him as a “shady hustler” and even incites a physical altercation. This confrontation is not unwarranted since Pete begins to flirt with a teenager he met in his Driver’s Ed class. The two seem friendly, but his pursuit of an affair with her ends abruptly when a popular guy known as “Handsome” steps in to talk to her, mirroring the intervention by Don at the bar.

4. A Prostitute

Season 5

Remarkably, in the same episode, Pete found himself in two complicated situations: one involving a prostitute and another attempting an affair with his Driver’s Ed classmate named “Signal 30”. It appears this behavior stems directly from feelings of rejection. The interaction with the prostitute is significant as she suggests various personas to cater to his desires, yet it’s only when she says “‘you’re my king’” that he consents. This can be interpreted as a clear response to his feelings of powerlessness in other parts of the episode.

In simpler terms, Pete has been outsmarted by Don in DIY projects and outmatched by Lane in fights, and his unsuccessful attempt to charm a young girl underscores a significant decline in his character. This downturn isn’t due to the girl herself, but rather because of her father’s presence at the brothel, which exposes Pete’s secretive lifestyle, causing embarrassment for Trudy as it reveals the true nature of his actions.

3. His Neighbor

Season 6

In the season 6 episode “The Doorway,” Pete’s relationship with Brenda, their neighbor, marked an audacious and unnerving escalation in his marital indiscretions. Previously, Pete had been unfaithful, but his involvement with a neighbor so close to Trudy and his home suggested a dramatic increase in his risky actions. This situation emphasized a growing feeling of arrogance and a startling disregard for the possible repercussions.

In the given episode, we don’t get a clear moment where Pete confesses. However, considering Trudy’s shrewd mind and her understanding of Pete’s personality, it’s likely that she figured out the truth by considering various clues. For instance, the neighbor’s agitated state after being abused by her husband added to the tense atmosphere. Maybe Pete’s hesitance to let the women be alone raised Trudy’s suspicions. Later on, in the next episode, we see Trudy challenging Pete about his actions.

2. Beth Dawes

Season 5

One noteworthy and sorrowful love affair that Pete Campbell had in the series ‘Mad Men’ was his involvement with Beth Dawes, portrayed by Alexis Bledel. Bledel skillfully portrays this fragile woman trapped in an unhappy marriage. Pete, captivated by the thought of rescuing Beth from her misery, becomes increasingly fixated on their relationship. This affair is passionate but fleeting.

Beth, married to insurance agent Howard Dawes and a regular train companion of Pete, appears to be involved in an affair for excitement and a means to escape her suburban boredom. Conversely, Pete seems to yearn for the sensation of being in love. This dynamic is underscored by Beth’s statement, “I thought we shared the same issue, but I was mistaken.“. The saddest aspect of this affair unfolds when Beth, following her regular electric shock therapy, fails to recognize Pete.

1. His Real Estate Agent

Season 7

In the seventh season, Bonnie Whiteside is Pete’s girlfriend while he resides in Los Angeles. This phase of the series presents a marked change in Pete’s work environment from New York. At this juncture, Pete and Trudy are separated but not divorced due to Trudy’s reluctance to be seen as a failure. Although the separation didn’t make his relationship with the charming real estate agent an affair, it wasn’t a long-term commitment.

In their short-lived romance, Bonnie and Pete appeared to be growing quite serious, especially when they traveled together to New York. Bonnie was eager to meet Pete’s daughter, Tammy, even going as far as purchasing a Barbie doll for her, but Pete hesitated to blend their lives. Their disagreement led to a breakup, yet this fleeting relationship played a substantial role in Pete’s gradual change of heart on Mad Men. Ultimately, the end of their relationship served as a catalyst for Pete to understand his true desires in life.
