Erin Doherty shared that the intense therapy scene in Adolescence, filmed in one continuous shot, wasn’t scripted – she and young actor Owen Cooper made it up as they went along.
The 33-year-old British actress shared that she appreciated how the 15-year-old actor challenged her to think on her feet. She explained that his unexpected actions helped her truly connect with and become her character, Briony, in that scene.
During a courtroom scene, the actress playing Jamie, Owen Cooper, unexpectedly yawned. The other actress responded by playfully calling her out on it.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar UK, Erin opened up about filming the award-winning Netflix series.
When asked about Jamie’s unexpected yawn during the courtroom scene, the actress explained that she had fully become the character Briony and reacted naturally as Briony would have.
Someone – either me or a woman – asked him what he was up to. I wasn’t going to ignore that, and I wanted to challenge him. I’m happy I did, because it led to us wrestling.
Erin described the single-take filming style of Adolescence as both thrilling and risky.
She explained that there’s always a worry the final edit won’t quite capture your original vision. But this filming style gave them creative freedom, and it felt both thrilling and risky.
Oh my gosh, you guys, this show! It dropped in March and everyone immediately started talking about it. It’s seriously amazing and so gripping – it’s about this poor 13-year-old boy who gets accused of something terrible… murdering a schoolgirl. I’ve watched it like, three times already, and it just gets better each time!

Fans got their first glimpse of Erin on set in September while she was filming the new BBC drama, California Avenue, and she looked quite different.
The actress channeled 1970s style with her vintage clothes and striking new look while filming a scene with a young actor dressed as an astronaut.
Though she’s played Princess Anne in the popular series The Crown before, Erin Doherty looked completely different as she transformed into her new character, Lela, for the six-episode drama.
She concealed her natural hair with a straight, blonde wig and completed the look with the popular smoky blue eyeshadow of the time.
She wore her trademark psychedelic maxi dress, a flowing gown with a blue and green geometric design, and carried a large cream-colored handbag.
I absolutely loved Maisie Williams’ recent look! She totally nailed a 70s vibe with this amazing, perfectly fitted denim trench coat and a beautiful, classic paisley scarf. It was such a stylish and put-together outfit!
Erin looked panicked and rushed over to scold the young actor portraying her son.
While they were setting up for the next shot, she quietly reviewed her lines, taking out her script from her bag.
California Avenue, a new series created by BAFTA-winning Hugo Blick, was first revealed by the BBC in June. He also wrote and directed it.
