Rebecca Gayheart, along with her daughters Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, shared a heartfelt message honoring Eric Dane just before the one-month anniversary of his passing.
Actor Dane DeHaan, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan (‘McSteamy’) on Grey’s Anatomy, passed away on February 19th at the age of 53. He had been diagnosed with ALS approximately a year prior to his death.
This uncommon and currently untreatable disease gradually damages the nervous system, leading to increasing muscle weakness and eventual paralysis.
Even after separating in 2017, Dane and Gayheart remained on good terms as they co-parented their children and never completed their divorce. They actually decided to stay married shortly before Dane announced his diagnosis of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Even as they both continued to see other people, Gayheart, 54, consistently provided strong support to him during his final illness.
This Wednesday, she shared a video on Instagram featuring Dane and their kids, along with a heartfelt message: ‘We’re heartbroken—we’ll always love you,’ signed by their daughters.
Gayheart shared the post just after she and her daughters, with Dane, were seen in public for the first time since he passed away almost a month earlier.
They went to the premiere of a new movie, ‘The Drama,’ which featured Zendaya, who worked with Dane on ‘Euphoria,’ and Robert Pattinson.
Sam Levinson, the creator of the show Euphoria and son of filmmaker Barry Levinson, was one of many people who donated to a GoFundMe campaign created by friends to help support Gayheart and her daughters after the passing of Dane Cook.
Just after news broke about a public memorial for Dane in Los Angeles (according to TMZ), she appeared at the premiere of The Drama.
The event seems to have started because fans were upset that Dane was not included in the Oscars’ memorial tribute last Sunday, and they’ve organized something in response.
According to a friend of Gayheart, the memorial was intended to help Dane feel happy, cherished, and to understand that his life had meaning.
This event is also a tribute to the fans, whose heartfelt messages of support and sympathy deeply moved Dane’s family.
A source close to the Gayheart family said they were upset Dane wasn’t included in the Oscars’ tribute to those the industry lost, but they recognized that 2025 was a particularly tragic year with many significant losses.
The ceremony celebrated Hollywood icons like Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, and Catherine O’Hara. Barbra Streisand paid tribute to Robert Redford, and Billy Crystal led a special celebration honoring Rob Reiner, surrounded by other stars.
Many were surprised by the exclusions, including actors James Van Der Beek, known for Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, and French film legend Brigitte Bardot.
Eric Dane secretly recorded a final message for his daughters, which will be released after his death as a Netflix special called ‘Famous Last Words: Eric Dane’.
Oh my gosh, he looked right into the camera and said it… right to Billie and Georgia! It was like he was speaking directly to them. He admitted things weren’t perfect, that he messed up sometimes, but he really wanted them to know he tried. And then, that little smile… ‘We had a blast, didn’t we?’ It just… it broke my heart in the best way. He really cares, you can just feel it!
Dane wanted to share four important life lessons with his daughters before he passed away.
He explained that learning to focus on the present moment was key, though challenging. He used to spend a lot of time lost in thought, worrying, feeling sorry for himself, and dwelling on past mistakes. He’d constantly replay events and criticize his own choices, thinking things like, ‘I should have handled that differently.’
Eventually, he firmly stated, ‘Enough is enough.’ He described this as a crucial shift in thinking, explaining that he made the decision simply to protect himself.
Dane also advised people to find something to be passionate about. ‘It doesn’t have to be a person,’ he explained, ‘though falling in love with someone is great too. Just find something to truly love and care about.’
He shared that he first became interested in acting when his daughters were young, and encouraged everyone to “find what you love—something that excites you and gives you a reason to look forward to each day.”
He also advised choosing friends carefully, finding people who truly understand and support you, and being fully present for them in return. He believed the best friends offer unconditional support – they’ll be there for you without judgment, expectations, or needing explanations.
He expressed deep thankfulness for the friends who helped him during his illness, and advised his daughters to prioritize their friendships. He told them to simply be there for their friends, love them wholeheartedly, and cherish those bonds, as friends will bring joy, offer guidance, provide support, and even be lifesavers.
He concluded with a powerful plea: fight every battle, whether physical or personal, with all your strength and maintain your integrity. He urged them to never give up, even when facing difficulties like illness.
Dane encouraged Billie and Georgia to persevere through any challenge, telling them to “never give up.” Even though the disease was weakening his body, he insisted it wouldn’t break his spirit. He advised them that life inevitably brings unexpected difficulties, and when those moments arrive, to confront them with honesty, strength, and dignity, no matter how overwhelming they may seem.
The actor, originally from San Francisco, became emotional as he shared his thoughts: ‘I hope I’ve shown everyone that you can handle any challenge, even the most difficult ones, with grace and courage. Keep fighting, and never lose your pride.’
He finished by telling Billie and Georgia, ‘You mean the world to me. I love you both. These are my final words.’ Good night.
