Rebecca Gayheart, the wife of the late Eric Dane, has been seen publicly for the first time since his passing at age 53.
At 54, Gayheart appeared saddened as she visited the Los Angeles home where Dane had lived before he passed away.
The actress appeared deeply upset after witnessing Dane’s quick decline in health. She was seen leaving his home wearing a beige trench coat and sunglasses.
The photos of Gayheart emerged after friends of the late Dane launched a GoFundMe campaign to support his daughters, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13, and Gayheart.
The actor passed away on Thursday, just months after sharing his diagnosis of ALS, a disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Dane and Gayheart began dating in 2003 and quickly married in Las Vegas the following year. Though they briefly separated in 2018, they reconciled and stayed married until Dane’s passing.
It was revealed on Friday that Dane had secretly recorded a final message for his daughters, intended for release on Netflix after his passing.
Friends of actor Dane, best known for his role as ‘McSteamy’ on the TV show Grey’s Anatomy, have started a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support for his daughters.
As of Friday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised $7,705 of its $250,000 goal.
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Eric Dane after a courageous fight with ALS. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who meant everything to him, according to a statement on the fundraising page.
After Eric got the news, it completely changed him, but in the best way. He instantly became the voice for everyone fighting ALS, like it was his calling. Honestly, watching him use his platform to fight for us, for all of us battling this disease, and just demand that people pay attention… it was incredible. He wasn’t just talking about it, he was fighting for us, and it meant the world.
Despite his worsening health, he continued to dedicate himself to helping others battling the same illness. Sadly, his condition worsened much faster than expected, so his friends created this GoFundMe to provide for his daughters and their future.
Every donation, big or small, will make a real difference in helping Eric’s daughters feel secure now and in the years to come.
Shortly before he passed away, Dane filmed an interview with Netflix, sharing a heartfelt message specifically for his daughters.
After Dane’s passing, Netflix released a new documentary offering fans a personal look at his thoughts and feelings before he died.
A 50-minute film called “Famous Last Words: Eric Dane” was secretly recorded with the agreement that it would only be released after his death, according to reports.
As the interview with Brad Falchuk, Gwyneth Paltrow’s husband, was wrapping up, Dane spoke directly to his daughters, Billie and Georgia, saying, ‘I did my best. I made mistakes along the way, but I always tried.’
He continued, ‘Overall, we had a blast, didn’t we?’
Dane then shared four important lessons he’d learned while sick, asking everyone to pay close attention.
‘First, live now, right now in the present. It’s hard, but I learned to do that,’ Dane said.
I used to spend a lot of time lost in my thoughts, stuck worrying and feeling sorry for myself, and filled with shame and self-doubt. I’d constantly replay past choices, questioning everything I’d done, thinking ‘If only I’d done things differently.’ But I’ve decided to stop doing that now.
Dane said that ‘out of pure survival,’ he was forced to stay in the present.
Dane also advised finding something to be passionate about. “Fall in love,” he said, “with anything – a person, a hobby, a cause… just find something to care deeply about.”
‘Find your passion, your joy. Find the thing that makes you wanna get up in the morning.’
He shared with his daughters that he discovered his passion for acting when he was their age, and encouraged them to wholeheartedly follow their own dreams.
He also stressed the importance of choosing friends carefully. He encouraged people to connect with those who feel right and to be open to connecting with others, and to fully invest in those relationships. He explained that true friends will support you without judgment or expecting anything in return.
Dane said he was profoundly grateful to the friends who ‘stepped up’ during his illness.
He simply advised being present for the people you care about and loving your friends wholeheartedly. Cherish those friendships—they’ll bring joy, offer guidance, provide support, and sometimes, even be your lifesavers.
He urged everyone to face difficulties, whether related to health or anything else, with courage and grace. He emphasized the importance of never surrendering and continuing to fight until the very end. Despite the disease gradually weakening his body, he declared it would never diminish his spirit.
Life inevitably throws unexpected challenges your way. When those moments happen, meet them with courage, honesty, and dignity, even when they feel overwhelming.
He finished by saying he hoped he’d shown them they could handle anything life throws their way – even the most difficult challenges. He urged them to fight with courage and maintain their pride, his voice filled with emotion.
My dearest Billie and Georgia, you mean the world to me. I love you both very much. Good night, and these are my final words.
In November, Gayheart discussed helping her daughters cope with Dane’s fight against ALS during an appearance on the Broad Ideas podcast.
‘He is our family. He is your father,’ she told them after Dane revealed his diagnosis in April.
‘We show up, and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it.’
Still, she said at the time that her relationship with Dane was ‘super complicated.’
‘We’ve been separated for eight years. The kids live with me 100 percent of the time,’ she said.
‘There’s been lots of just stuff, other stuff, but I try to stay optimistic about it all.’
She explained she’s hoping to learn from this experience and show her children how to cope with difficult times, saying it’s been a real challenge.
I’m not sure if I’m handling things effectively, or even if my approach is correct. I’m simply doing my best to be present and support them, and I suppose we’ll see how it all turns out in the end.
