Late Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane is being remembered by his longtime co-stars.
As a long-time viewer, I remember when Grey’s Anatomy was truly at its peak, and Eric Dane was a huge part of that. He was fantastic as the charming plastic surgeon, Mark Sloan – everyone called him ‘McSteamy’! He was a main character starting in season 3 and really brought a lot of energy to the show. Though he popped up in a couple of episodes before and after his main run, it was his time as a series regular – up until his character’s heartbreaking exit at the beginning of season 9 – that really cemented him as a fan favorite. Even with the show still going strong in season 22, I always think back to those earlier seasons and how great Dane was.
Dane passed away on Thursday due to complications from ALS, just under a year after sharing his diagnosis in April 2025. Since then, many of his colleagues from Grey’s Anatomy have used social media to honor and remember him. Here are a few of their posts.
Kim Raver, who played Dr. Teddy Altman, shared photos of herself with Eric Dane, both while filming and in personal moments. She described Eric as a bright and joyful person, noting his positive energy was evident on the set of Grey’s Anatomy and in his personal life with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters. Raver fondly remembered his playful spirit and impeccable comedic timing, saying he could deliver a line with a mischievous twinkle in his eye that would leave everyone amazed. She expressed how much he will be missed.
Here are screenshots of Instagram Stories celebrating Eric Dane, shared by his Grey’s Anatomy co-stars Kevin McKidd, James Pickens Jr., and Patrick Dempsey.
ABC and 20th Television have issued an official statement regarding Dane’s passing, which is included below.
We are heartbroken to learn of Eric Dane’s passing. He was a tremendously talented actor who will be fondly remembered for his memorable work on Grey’s Anatomy. His strength and dignity while facing ALS were truly inspiring. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all those who admired him.
Stars from Grey’s Anatomy are among many celebrities paying tribute to Eric Dane, joining colleagues and friends like John Stamos (Wedding Wars), Ashton Kutcher (a fellow fantasy football league member), Alyssa Milano (Charmed), Martin Lawrence (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), Maria Shriver (who published his memoir), and Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson.
With his colleagues still mourning his passing, we can expect to see many more tributes to him from the Grey’s Anatomy cast and crew.
The outpouring of tributes to Eric Dane demonstrates he’ll be remembered for years to come, not only for his acting work on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, but also for his dedication to raising awareness about ALS. He actively supported the I AM ALS organization, even traveling to Washington, D.C. to advocate for their Push for Progress Initiative.
