Actor Eric Dane disclosed that he has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Despite this, he expressed feelings of gratitude and determination to carry on working, as the third season of “Euphoria” approaches.

The actor known for “Euphoria” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” who shared his diagnosis on Tuesday, had a conversation with “Good Morning America” regarding his Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This is a condition that cannot be cured, where the nerve cells connecting the brain, spine, and muscles start to break down. As a result, these muscles are unable to receive instructions or signals on when to move or function. Without these vital messages, there’s no movement or functioning in various systems, including eating and breathing.

In a recent interview airing on Monday, the actor revealed that approximately 18 months ago, he began noticing health issues. After several consultations with doctors and various tests, he discovered that he was among the roughly 5,000 people diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) in the U.S. each year.

In conversation with Diane Sawyer, Dane mentioned feeling some weakness in his right hand, which he initially didn’t give much thought to. He hypothesized that it might have been the result of excessive texting or hand fatigue.

A few weeks after that, I found that the condition had worsened slightly, so I sought help from a hand expert, who referred me to another hand specialist. Then I consulted a neurologist, who in turn sent me to another neurologist, who concluded, “This is beyond my area of expertise.

As a child, Adam Devine experienced a severe accident that continues to impact him. However, his latest diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome turned out to be incorrect.

Nine months after consulting with the first physician, Dane had his diagnosis.

Now “those three letters” — ALS — hit him every morning when he wakes up, he said.

Dane explained, “I only have one arm that works… it’s my left one. My right side, however, doesn’t work at all.

Adding to his terror, he mentioned that his left arm appears to be “deteriorating.” He expressed concern, stating, “In a few more months, I fear I may also lose my left hand. It’s a chilling realization.

As a passionate swimmer and water polo player in my past, I remember vividly the instant when I sensed an unsettling change in my familiar element – the water. The day unfolded with me eagerly jumping from a boat for a snorkeling adventure alongside my precious daughter in the vast ocean. However, as I attempted to navigate through the depths, I found myself struggling to regain the strength and momentum required to return to the safety of our boat. In that critical moment, it was my young, courageous daughter, Georgia – the youngest of my beautiful family with the remarkable Rebecca Gayheart – who came to my aid.

Following her return to the boat, Dane instructed her to go back out with her companion and the snorkeling guide. Simultaneously, he found himself overcome with tears.

“I was heartbroken.”

Life span for individuals diagnosed with ALS can differ based on when symptoms first appeared, the type of ALS they have, and whether they are male or female. On average, the median lifespan from the onset of symptoms is approximately 30 months as reported by ALS United of Greater Chicago. While some people may pass away within a year, others have lived for more than two decades past their diagnosis, according to the group. It appears that an earlier onset might be associated with a higher survival rate.
