English breaststroke champion Oscar Bilbao joins Arizona State swim program

As a devoted follower of swimming and a proud Brit myself, I cannot help but be thrilled at the prospect of Oscar Bilbao gracing the pools of Arizona State University this fall! His stellar performance at the Commonwealth Youth Games, where he scooped up an impressive four gold medals, is a testament to his determination and raw talent.

British breaststroke champion Oscar Bilbao is heading to the United States to join Arizona State University’s swim team this fall. This skilled international competitor represented England in the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, where he claimed three individual gold medals and another as a member of his country’s 4×100 mixed medley relay team. Using SwimSwam’s conversion data, it’s estimated that Bilbao’s times at the Youth Games would have placed him among the Top 10 finishers in three individual events at the latest Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships.

A young star ready for the next step

Winning at the Commonwealth Youth Games indicates that Bilbao is prepared for tougher challenges ahead. Throughout his youth swimming career, Bilbao was determined to surround himself with top-notch coaching and competition. He even relocated to Dubai to join Hamilton Aquatics as a young swimmer. Now, it appears that joining the Sun Devils in the U.S. is the ideal step for Bilbao to take his skills to an even higher level.

As someone who has been following the Olympic Games for many years, I have seen countless athletes rise to fame and success after dominating at the NCAA level. If Oscar continues his impressive performance against the top swimmers in the NCAA, he could very well secure a spot on Team USA for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. It’s an exciting prospect, and one that I can personally relate to, having watched many athletes from my alma mater go on to represent their countries at the highest level of competition.
