Endeavour’s Shaun Evans was “repelled” by new ITV crime drama role

As a fan who has been captivated by Shaun Evans‘ portrayal of Endeavour Morse, I must say that his transformation into the chilling John Sweeney in “Until I Kill You” has left me both astonished and unsettled. The depth of his acting prowess is once again on full display as he delves into the dark recesses of a serial killer’s mind.

As a devoted admirer, let me share that Shaun Evans, known for his role in Endeavour, expressed a strong aversion towards his latest character in the upcoming ITV crime series, Until I Kill You. He found it unsettling to delve into the role of a serial killer.

According to Delia Balmer’s book “Living with a Serial Killer,” the four-part series portrays Evans assuming the character of serial murderer, John Sweeney.

This narrative, presented through the eyes of Sweeney’s girlfriend, Balmer (played by Anna Maxwell Martin), recounts Balmer’s harrowing odyssey, starting from her encounter with Sweeney and extending to her relentless pursuit for justice after he attempted to take her life.

Discussing his role with The Mirror, actor Evans admitted that he initially found the book distasteful and almost declined the opportunity.

He commented, “It’s clear you’re playing the villain, which initially gave me pause. But upon reflection, I found it intriguing. However, it’s a delicate situation since we’re dealing with real individuals here.

As a dedicated fan, I opted not to encounter the genuine Delia prior to filming. Instead, Evans immersed himself in recordings of Sweeney’s voice to ready himself for the role, and he shared that he had Sweeney’s drawings of his victims tucked away in his dressing room on set as a constant reminder.

In this situation, Sweeney restrained Delia on a bed, menacing her with both a knife and a firearm for several days. Under these harrowing circumstances, Evans expressed that it seemed as if he had been struck hard in the abdomen, using the phrase “it felt like getting hit in the stomach.

He said: “It’s the scene where Delia has been tied to the bed and it’s about his manipulation of her and it was a very harrowing moment and I thought, ‘This did actually happen’.”

Maxwell Martin commented: “The scene didn’t resonate with me as strongly because, being bound to a bare bed, my mind automatically shifts towards the practical and technical aspects.

Until I Kill You is yet to confirm a release date on ITV1 and ITVX.
