Emotional Ridley Scott reflects on brother Tony’s tragic death 12 years after director’s suicide aged 68
As a dedicated fan who has followed Ridley Scott‘s illustrious career for decades, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of empathy and admiration towards him after reading about his loss of his brother Tony. The bond between these two filmmaking giants was evident in their work, and it’s heartbreaking to think that such talent was taken from us too soon.
In a heartfelt conversation, Ridley Scott spoke about the devastating death of his older brother Tony, who took his life twelve years ago at the age of 68.
86-year-old Director of Gladiator and Alien, felt emotional when recalling memories of his younger brother, who is renowned for helming iconic movies such as Top Gun, Enemy of the State, and Man on Fire.
On August 19, 2012, the English filmmaker took his life by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in California following the writing of a suicide note.
In 2014, Ridley disclosed that his brother was engaged in a prolonged struggle against cancer. He termed his passing as ‘incomprehensible,’ expressing that Tony had been seriously ill for some time, which was when Ridley understood the need to reconnect with him more intensely, even though they were already close.
In an interview with THR this week before the launch of Gladiator 2, when asked if he had any additional comments, Ridley expressed: “I long for my brother.
He shared that he was offered the chance to direct Top Gun: Maverick, but he turned it down because he didn’t want to emulate his brother.
Tony has a consistent fascination for the past, fantasy alternatives, and futuristic concepts. Most of my possessions fall under these categories, such as historical facts, imaginative fantasies, or science-fiction novels. However, Tony isn’t fond of fantasies; examples include Alien, Blade Runner, and Legend.
Previously, Ridley expressed his admiration for his brother by saying to Variety: “‘I miss my friend. Even during his treatment, I’d visit him and say, ‘Forget the chemotherapy, let’s have a vodka martini,’ and we would go out together.’
Tony departed with twin boys, both 12 years old at the time, and his spouse Donna, a well-known model and actress who featured in several of his movies.
His demise occurred approximately four weeks following an instance where he appeared distressed as he exited a Beverly Hills eatery on the 23rd of July, 2012. However, his friends asserted that there were no marital issues between him and his spouse, Donna.
2012 saw his relatives inform medical professionals that there was no evidence of brain cancer or any significant illness in the British filmmaker, prior to his suicide leap.
According to Craig Harvey, who is in charge of operations at the coroner’s office, the autopsy didn’t show any noticeable indications of a brain tumor in Scott.
Tom Cruise paid tribute calling Tony ‘a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable’.
He added: ‘Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him … My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time.’
Tony was the initial Scott brother to experience box office triumph with Top Gun, which turned out to be the highest-earning movie of 1986, bringing in a staggering $176 million.
The movie featuring Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer as co-stars received nominations for four Academy Awards and secured an award for Best Original Song with “Take My Breath Away.
Four years after their previous collaboration, Scott reunited with Cruise once more, this time for the blockbuster film “Days of Thunder”. Meanwhile, they were also working on a sequel to the popular movie “Top Gun”.
