Accompanying her were her agent, a representative from Netflix’s public relations team, and someone who seemed to be a security personnel, according to reports from both the Los Angeles Times and Page Six.

Initially seen as a strong contender for awards this season, the actress faced setbacks when old social media messages from 2021 were rediscovered, revealing her making derogatory remarks about Muslims, George Floyd, and the lack of diversity at the Oscars.

At the 97th Academy Awards, where Karla had been recognized as a nominee for best actress, she was observed engaged in a lengthy discussion with Adrien Brody at the hotel bar. This conversation took place just prior to Adrien’s win for ‘The Brutalist’, where he received the award for best actor.

At the event, someone shared with Page Six: “I’ve been attending for around 15 or 16 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever witnessed something like that.

A source disclosed that personal security isn’t allowed during the Oscars event, implying that the bodyguard might be an appointment made by the Academy.

According to various reports, Karla was accompanied by her spouse, Marisa Gutiérrez, and their child, Victoria, at the awards ceremony.

According to another report, a journalist attempted to interview Karla at a bar, and it appeared she was open to talking; however, the conversation was abruptly ended.

Conan O’Brien, the host of the Oscars, made a reference to the recent controversy in his opening speech. He stated that ‘Anora’ used the F-word an astounding 479 times, which surpasses the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist by a whopping three times. In a joking manner, he advised Karla: ‘If you plan to post about the Oscars, don’t forget that my name is Jimmy Kimmel.’

A representative for Karla declined to comment on the presence of security, Page Six said.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer had urged attendees to show respect for the nominee.

In his statement, he made it clear that the Academy firmly opposes hate speech.

‘Karla’s nomination marks a significant milestone in history. This is truly momentous. Despite this, she remains a nominee. We acknowledge her achievement, yet we distance ourselves from any form of hate speech.’

He went on to say: ‘Should Karla join us this evening, let’s maintain a sense of reverence. With over 200 nominees, tonight is not just about one individual. Our purpose is to honor and celebrate each and every one of the nominees.’

Karla made history as the first transgender actress nominated for Best Actress by the Academy, with Emilia Pérez heading this year’s nominees with a total of 13. In response to the controversy surrounding her past social media posts, she issued a statement to Page Six: ‘I wish to address the dialogue sparked by my old social media content that has caused pain.’

She expressed: “Being part of an underrepresented group, I’ve experienced this hardship intimately, and I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have hurt. Throughout my life, I have consistently advocated for a more equitable society.

‘I believe light will always triumph over darkness.’

Recently, Gascon has gained backing from Madonna in the form of public expressions of worry, which she shared on social media platforms.

Madonna, known for her hits like “Material Girl,” posted on Instagram Stories, expressing concern about the escalating lynch mob mentality in our nation. She found it troubling that there’s a sense of enjoyment among people as they see others fall or be silenced, and added that being blacklisted is particularly unsettling.

The singer likewise expressed her distress, saying, ‘I’m saddened to see the suffering of transgender individuals who aren’t embraced by a society that apprehensively regards them as strange due to their differences.’

Karla posted a picture of her and Madonna affectionately hugging, expressing gratitude towards the singer for displaying kindness and extending an invitation to her Oscars party, which is happening later this week.
