Emmerdale ‘in turmoil’ as iconic star exits the soap after 16 years and others ‘fear they could be AXED as bosses plan to cut the cast by 10%’
As a lifestyle expert with over three decades of experience in the entertainment industry, I must say that the recent news about the exits of Lesley Dunlop and Roxy Shahidi from Emmerdale has set off alarm bells for me, much like an old-fashioned fire alarm going off during a live broadcast.
16 long, unforgettable years I’ve been a dedicated viewer of Emmerdale, and now, one of its most iconic stars is bidding adieu! This departure has me on edge, as rumors swirl about potential cast cuts that could follow this massive overhaul. As an ardent fan, I can only hope the show keeps the magic alive!
Lesley Dunlop, aged 68, who’s been portraying the character of Brenda Walker on the ITV soap opera since 2008, will be saying goodbye within the upcoming few months.
After it was revealed that Roxy Shahidi, the actress who portrays Leyla Harding, is departing, producers are reportedly planning a dramatic exit for her character. In other words, they plan to write Leyla out of the show in an exciting or impactful manner.
It’s been reported that the departure of two key Emmerdale characters has left the cast feeling uneasy, as there’s speculation among them about who might be leaving next. This uncertainty arises due to whispers that ITV is considering a 10% reduction in the show’s cast members.
According to a source, multiple departures have occurred lately, and there’s chatter about more to come. With individuals such as Lesley and Roxy possibly involved, the atmosphere is tense, as no one feels secure about their positions.
In more recent times, the scale of the series has expanded significantly; however, soap operas tend to be costly productions. Since reducing expenses often leads to staff reductions, it’s regrettable yet unavoidable. Still, it’s a great pity for everyone involved, including their friends and coworkers.
At present, there are 60 regular actors on the show, yet it’s rumored that the management is considering options to reduce expenses.
Numerous actors, particularly those who have been around for a while, are currently anxious about their positions, as one source has disclosed that job security is crucial for some of them.
One stated, ‘Those who have stayed for a considerable period are completely dependent on their current income. This situation is causing great concern.’
TopMob have contacted ITV for a comment.
A few weeks back, it was made known that Roxy would be leaving the show – after a dramatic plotline unfolded involving her being pursued by a stalker and abducted in startling sequences.
It is now thought her character will be killed off.
According to a source, Roxy has cherished her experience on the soap opera and created countless joyful memories since her debut at age 17.
Over time, the actors on set feel more akin to her family, and she’s significantly improved as an actress. Now, she senses it’s the right moment to venture out and explore fresh opportunities in her acting career.
As a devoted admirer, I can confidently say that she’s genuinely thrilled about the gripping turn her narrative is taking. Her character, Leyla, will unfortunately meet her end on-screen, but she’s eager to leave with a bang and etch her memory indelibly in our minds.
For quite some time now, I’ve had a dual identity – one of which, for a short spell, involved performing as a pole dancer. However, my current professional path lies in the world of event planning, where I bring joy and excitement to countless occasions.
Among her notable plot developments, she struggles with addiction to drugs and gets gunned down by the malevolent character, Meena Jutla, portrayed by Paige Sandhu.
From 2021 to 2023, the character was wedded to Liam Cavanagh, played by Jonny McPherson. However, their union came to an end in 2023 due to Liam’s infidelity.
In 2010, it was uncovered that Roxy is biologically connected to Jacob Gallagher, who is portrayed by Joe-Warren Plant. Prior to this revelation, Jacob had been adopted.
Currently, each episode of Emmerdale draws approximately four million viewers, and many more plan to watch it later through catch-up services.
1993 saw its highest viewership ever, as an astonishing 18 million people watched a plane crash into the quaint Yorkshire village on their screens.
