You can now rent the thrilling survival film Dead of Winter, starring Emma Thompson, on demand. Set against a snowy backdrop and featuring a story of resilience, it’s a perfect choice for a cold night. It’s available to rent in Standard or High Definition on Prime Video for £7.99 or £9.99.
Directed by Brian Kirk and written by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb, the film Dead of Winter came out in UK cinemas in September. The movie stars Thompson as Barb, a woman from Minnesota dealing with the loss of her husband, Carl.
Barb revisits a lake from her childhood to remember a loved one, but unexpectedly discovers a new mission. She encounters a strange couple, Judy Greer and Marc Menchaca, and realizes a young woman named Leah (Laurel Marsden) is being held prisoner. Determined to help, Barb makes a promise to free her.

According to The Wrap, the film is a clever and gripping thriller with excellent acting throughout. It’s the type of suspenseful movie audiences often request, yet rarely receives the recognition it deserves.
The AV Club also highly recommended the film, describing Dead of Winter as a lean but captivating thriller. They praised the actors’ subtle performances and director Kirk’s attention to the main character Barb’s emotional journey, even while surrounded by turmoil.
According to The Guardian, Thompson’s warm and approachable personality effectively balances the intense villainy of Greer and her cruel plans for the teenager she’s holding captive, creating a genuinely unsettling atmosphere.
Dead of Winter isn’t the only film featuring Thompson to be made available this month, though.
The popular holiday movie Last Christmas, featuring and co-written by the actor, is now available to stream on Disney+ just in time for the holidays.
