Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s forgotten crime thriller has just been added to Prime Video
The long-forgotten crime thriller starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, titled “Gangster Squad“, is now available on Prime Video in both the United Kingdom and Ireland.
In 2013, I found myself immersed in a thrilling journey directed by the talented Ruben Fleischer, known for movies like Venom, Uncharted, and Zombieland. This film took me on an action-packed ride as it trailed a secretive team of law enforcers trying to dismantle a powerful criminal network that had Los Angeles in its grip.
In addition to Stone and Gosling, the movie features actors such as Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Michael Peña from Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nick Nolte known for his role as Hulk, Giovanni Ribisi famously from Ted, Robert Patrick of Terminator 2 fame, and Sean Penn who was in Milk.
Or simply:
The movie also includes actors like Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Michael Peña (from the Marvel Universe), Nick Nolte (Hulk), Giovanni Ribisi (Ted), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), and Sean Penn (Milk) along with Stone and Gosling.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that the film is now accessible for streaming on Prime Video! This perk comes with an Amazon Prime subscription, which sets you back £8.99 a month or £95 annually. Besides enjoying this movie, your subscription grants you free delivery, music streaming, and cloud photo storage too – quite a deal, isn’t it?
Additionally, there’s an individual subscription for Prime Video available at a more affordable price point of £7.99 per month. However, it might not be immediately apparent, as you’ll need to navigate to the Prime sign-up or account management page and look for the option to adjust your plan.
At the time it came out, the movie titled “Gangster Squad” managed to earn around $105 million at the box office, which could be considered a modest success. Nevertheless, it hasn’t received impressive ratings from either critics or viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 30% rating among critics and a slightly better 57% rating among audiences.
From my perspective as a movie enthusiast, while I admired the “swanky” ambiance of Gangster Squad and appreciated the “skilled” ensemble cast, the movie fell short due to its “uninspiring” script and underdeveloped characters, preventing it from reaching its full cinematic potential.
In our critique, we commended Penn’s chilling portrayal of Mickey Cohen, while Variety hailed the movie as a grippingly gritty dive into the criminal underworld. On the other hand, The Hollywood Reporter didn’t share the same enthusiasm, pointing out that the actors were mostly deprived of standout moments.
Moving forward, Stone is set to collaborate with director Yorgos Lanthimos on a new project titled “Bugonia,” which is a sci-fi remake of the 2003 South Korean film “Save the Green Planet!”. The two have worked together in the past.
Earlier this month, it was announced that the movie, starring Jesse Plemons as well, is now set to premiere in the U.S. earlier than initially scheduled. The new release date is October 31st, which is one week ahead of the original plan.
Gangster Squad is now available to stream via a Prime Video subscription.
