Emma D’Arcy only now feels like part of the Game of Thrones universe”
As a dedicated fan of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” universe and its latest prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” I’ve been nothing short of captivated by Emma D’Arcy’s performance as Rhaenyra Targaryen. Their portrayal of this complex character is nothing less than scintillating, and they’ve managed to break through the ranks of relative anonymity to become a household name in the realm of Westeros.
In the premiere of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series, “House of the Dragon”, Matt Smith, portraying the unpredictable warrior Daemon Targaryen, was the most recognized star. Most other cast members were experienced actors who were not widely known to the general public.
However, things have shifted now. Among the cast, Emma D’Arcy, portraying potential queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, has gained significant attention. They have become widely recognized, with their viral video about their favorite drink, their performance as Rhaenyra is captivating and vibrant, and they provide insightful responses in interviews that make them a delight to feature.
D’Arcy has experienced rapid fame, yet they admitted to Muse Magazine that they didn’t truly feel like a genuine member of the “Game of Thrones” universe until recently. In their own words, “I’m deeply appreciative for being given such a valued and significant character. However, I felt like an outsider in the ‘Game of Thrones’ world for quite some time. It wasn’t until after Season 2 that I feel I was issued my ‘Westeros’ travel permit.
For some time now, D’Arcy has been portraying Rhaenyra in the series; however, as HBO has only released two seasons of the show to date, each season taking approximately two years to produce, she’s spent a considerable amount of time with Rhaenyra already. Rumor has it that the show will run for another two seasons, so D’Arcy is roughly halfway through her journey. By the conclusion of the series, it’s expected that she’ll live, breathe, and dream the Seven Kingdoms.
D’Arcy mentioned that playing Rhaenyra requires extensive preparation. Instead of just absorbing existing media, he suggested focusing on interacting with the script, deciphering it, and internalizing the story from her point of view. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of critically analyzing the work from a distance, creating a comprehensive theory that guides Rhaenyra’s character throughout a scene, episode, or even an entire season.
As a devoted admirer, I must say that D’Arcy truly shines onscreen, portraying a captivating leader navigating through complex political and military challenges. It’s not hard to imagine them having an abundance of roles to choose from once House of the Dragon concludes. For now, we eagerly await their return when House of the Dragon comes back for its third season, expectedly in 2026.
