Emma D’Arcy asked for (and will probably get) a sword in House of the Dragon season 3
As a long-time fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I eagerly anticipate every new development in House of the Dragon. Emma D’Arcy’s performance as Rhaenyra Targaryen has been nothing short of extraordinary, and her recent request for a weapon in season 3 has only added to my excitement.
In simpler terms, the second installment of “House of the Dragon” concluded earlier in the year, moving the Greens and the Blacks perilously near to an all-out conflict. By the time season 3 arrives, be prepared for a flurry of swords flashing and rivers flowing with blood.
In George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy) initially stays away from combat, but as the story progresses, she becomes more involved. Despite her role primarily being symbolic, she has emphasized the significance of carrying a sword and shield in war. A notable moment in season 2 showcases Rhaenyra holding a sword, which Emma D’Arcy seems to enjoy handling, as evident from behind-the-scenes footage.

That all leads up to the one serious request that D’Arcy has made of showrunner Ryan Condal ahead of House of the Dragon season 3: “The petition I’ve put in is I want a weapon,” D’Arcy said during a visit to the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Like it’s getting ridiculous. I don’t even mind if it’s like a little dagger, a short sword. I don’t really care.”
Contrary to what might be assumed, it appears D’Arcy doesn’t intend to use the weapon for a battle scene; rather, their concern is more pressing: “The men in the show don’t have to worry about where they place their hands because they’re always gripping their sword pommels,” they expressed. “This seems like an innuendo, and you can interpret it as you wish, but that’s the reality. Meanwhile, the rest of us are asking, ‘Where do we put our hands?’
It seems Rhaenyra might wave a sword above her head for emphasis in her speeches, but that’s a good observation. In any event, D’Arcy appears certain that their request for a sword will be granted next year. They explained, “Essentially, one hand will have a sword by then. That’s what I want, and I’ve made it clear to Ryan. I believe this is going to take place.
It seems D’Arcy might thrive more when they don costumes and handle props, based on general observations. Their account of donning Rhaenyra’s platinum wig during early filming for House of the Dragon season 2 is particularly captivating.
When we went back to shoot Series 2 and I had like an early wig fitting…It’s such a transformative process, right? Wigs are amazing, I think. And so suddenly was I her and sort of recognized this other person and everything that comes with her, I really felt like she had been in Watford the whole time. A bit like the kid who the parent doesn’t pick up, like I had just been remiss and I hadn’t come and collected her. And I was like, ‘so sorry, I’m back, I’m here, blah blah blah.’
When it comes to House of the Dragon’s third season, you can expect an abundance of wigs, swords, and dragons on HBO and Max, potentially in the year 2026. Based on current information, filming is likely to start in March of the following year.
