Eminem performs for the first time since his mom’s death as he sings controversial song about her
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for human dynamics, I must say that Eminem’s performance at the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix, following his mother Debbie Nelson’s passing, is a poignant reminder of the complexities and contradictions that life often presents.
Last week, when Debbie Nelson, Eminem’s mother, passed away from advanced lung cancer at the age of 69, he delivered his initial performance since then.
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t resist the chance to witness the legendary 52-year-old Slim Shady perform live, which turned out to be an unforgettable highlight during the thrilling Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix festivities!
Taking the stage, the Grammy-award-winning rap artist, known as Eminem (born Marshall Mathers), delivered his song “Without Me,” a piece that chronicles his complex bond with his mother.
The scathing song includes the lyrics, ‘F**k you Debbie,’ which he didn’t sing, but the crowd did.
Throughout my life, Eminem, the mastermind behind “Lose Yourself,” and his mom had a complex and largely strained bond that I’ve witnessed unfold across various albums of his.
Eminem’s first breakout hit, 1999’s My Name Is, also features lines slamming his mother.
‘I just found out my mom does more dope than I do (Damn). I told her I’d grow up to be a famous rapper. Make a record about doin’ drugs and name it after her.’
His 2002 song “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” includes verses about his mother. In one, he called her a ‘selfish woman’ and expressed the hope that she would ‘suffer in hell.’ Another track alleges that she used to drug his food with Valium as a child.
Debbie filed a lawsuit against her son for $10 million, accusing him of libel due to the verses referring to her in his song titled “My Name Is.
In the long run, the dispute was resolved with a payment of $25,000, but Debbie’s lawyers took the majority of it, leaving her with just $1,600 in the end.
Back in 2010, when Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer, it felt like even our longstanding disagreements took a backseat for a moment as we all rallied around her. However, over the past three years, it seems our connection has frayed once more.
But her death brings to an end any chance of a reconciliation between Eminem and his mother.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member has yet to comment publicly on his mother’s death, but his half-brother Nathan Mathers had plenty to say.
Nathan shared an Instagram Story expressing that he felt a strong mix of anger and complex feelings today.

After enduring years of strife in his connection with his mom, resulting in Emineem gaining custody of Nate during his teenage years, Nate’s sharp reaction ensued.
When Nate was eight years old, his life took an unexpected turn as he entered foster care. Eminem declared that at this point, he made a promise to himself to work towards regaining custody of him. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2004, Eminem explained that he had attempted to apply for full custody when he was twenty years old, but lacked the financial resources to do so.
At the age of sixteen, Nate ultimately got adopted by his renowned half-brother who is also a rapper, serving as a paternal influence in his life.
During an exceptional episode of Hailie Jade’s podcast, Just a Little Shady, held in 2023, Nate expressed: ‘Eminem served as the ideal mentor, guiding me to become the father I am now.’
After following in his brother’s footsteps, Nate now works within the music field, and he releases his music using the alias Nate Kane.
