Emily Rudd, who plays Nami in the Netflix live-action series One Piece, successfully advocated for her character’s costume to closely resemble the design from the original anime. Costume designer Kerry Anne Barnard revealed that Rudd pushed for this accuracy, particularly during the Reverse Mountain arc. The first season of One Piece covers five story arcs from the manga – Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island – which meant the show featured new outfits for characters like Nami and Zoro in each arc.
During the Reverse Mountain arc in the One Piece manga, Nami wears a baby-blue sleeveless shirt with a heart design, a dark-blue miniskirt, and her usual light-brown high-heeled sandals. The live-action series made a small change to her outfit: her shirt had long sleeves instead of being sleeveless, a decision made because of the cold weather during filming, but the shirt’s design remained the same.
Emily Rudd, who plays Nami in One Piece Season 2, was dedicated to accurately portraying the character’s appearance, even requesting a look similar to Nami’s from the Reverse Mountain arc. This was particularly challenging because filming took place during the winter months, according to costume designer Kerry Anne Barnard in an InStyle featurette.

Barnard explained that the costumes blended practicality with the manga’s style. They added long sleeves to keep actor Rudd warm while filming.
This is Nami’s outfit from the Reverse Mountain arc. We took some creative liberties with the design, moving away from a strictly manga-accurate vest. Because Emily, our actress, had a lot of action scenes and we were filming in very cold weather, we added long sleeves to keep her warm.
The costume designer explained that Rudd insisted on wearing Nami’s short skirt, even though it was cold. He told her he wanted to be as accurate as possible for the fans.
She was performing all these stunts in a very short skirt. She knew it would be cold, but she told me it was worth it to give the fans an authentic performance. She was incredibly tough about it, because it genuinely was freezing.

The costume designer for One Piece shared that Emily Rudd really committed to her role as Nami, which helped her create a genuine portrayal of the character. This meant prioritizing Nami’s confident, adventurous look over simply choosing comfortable clothes.
In Season 2 of One Piece, Nami also appears in her outfit from the Loguetown Arc, which consists of a dark blue shirt and a black skirt.

During the Little Garden Arc, Nami wore a plain long-sleeved shirt with blue sleeves and a yellow mini-skirt. Later, in the Whisky Peak Arc, she switched to a sleeveless top.
Season 2 of One Piece focused heavily on Nami as she guided the Straw Hat crew through the dangerous Grand Line and helped them defeat the assassins sent by the Baroque Works organization. The new season began streaming on Netflix on March 10th.
Why Emily Rudd’s Dedication as Nami Is Crucial to One Piece’s Success

Emily Rudd really focused on accurately portraying Nami, and fans loved her performance because of it.
Nami’s consistent outfit throughout the live-action series, staying true to her look since the beginning of One Piece, really captured her character. The creators, led by Rudd, did a great job of honoring the original story while also making the show practical to film.
Rudd is a longtime fan of both Nami and the One Piece series. She dedicated years to preparing for the role and delivered a fantastic audition. Her commitment to accurately representing the character’s outfit shows how much she wants to honor the show’s devoted fans.
Ultimately, how the show handles Nami’s character is very important for the future of One Piece. She’s become a fan favorite, both for longtime viewers and new ones, and consistently makes a strong impression whenever she’s featured.
