Emily in Paris season 5 will unfortunately see the return of Lucas Bravo

As a long-time fan of Emily in Paris, I must confess my excitement when the news about season 5 broke, but my heart sunk when I learned that Lucas Bravo, who plays Gabriel, will be returning despite his open disdain for the show’s creative decisions.

It’s confirmed: Lucas Bravo will return for Emily in Paris during its fifth season, even though he criticized the series after the airing of its fourth season, expressing his disapproval towards certain creative choices made by the show.

Production for the fifth season of Netflix’s popular romantic comedy is scheduled to start in France next summer, specifically from the first week of May 2025. Variety has confirmed this filming date and also announced that Bravo, who portrays Emily’s love interest Gabriel on the show, will return for the new season. However, it’s important to note that we might not be entirely thrilled with this news.

It’s common knowledge among fans that Bravo has been criticizing the show recently as he promotes his new movie, “Freedom.” In an interview with IndieWire, Bravo voiced his displeasure with the show and expressed doubts about whether he still wants to be involved with the cast.

In his passionate speech, Bravo expressed several concerns about the show. He compared Gabriel’s character development to avocados being made into guacamole, suggesting it was overly simplified. He also openly admitted his dissatisfaction with how his character is evolving and shared his frustration. Furthermore, he hinted at feeling restricted in terms of script modifications, implying that the writers have significant control over the characters’ words and emotions on set.

Yet, the highlight of the interview came when he criticized the show’s script decisions, asserting that it clung to elements it couldn’t quantify.

Bravo explained to IndieWire that they believe the secret ingredient behind their success is something intangible they couldn’t quantify, so they’re cautious about altering their formula and sticking with what works. They carefully avoid deviations as much as possible, likening it to handling many delicate soufflés. However, they emphasized that this doesn’t mean they are pregnant or going to Rome – both are untrue – but rather, there are numerous aspects of their work that require careful attention and involve minimal risk.

It’s not surprising that Bravo’s comments have sparked anger among fans, as they feel betrayed by his public criticism of the show that brought him fame. Although none of the cast members have publicly addressed his remarks, a source told Us Weekly that there will be tension due to this situation. Given how harshly he criticized the show and its writers for not taking risks and reducing his character to just another ingredient in guacamole, it’s understandable why fans are upset with him.

To put it plainly, we’d prefer if he chose to exit the series, or better yet, the show should decide to write his character out, as truthfully, he seems expendable.

In essence, while Gabriel plays a significant role in Emily’s life journey, this narrative primarily revolves around Emily Cooper. Following the occurrences of the previous season, we eagerly anticipate Emily to conclude the phase of her story involving Gabriel. Emily deserves a partner who prioritizes her needs over his own, someone who doesn’t make her feel insignificant or question herself, unlike Gabriel.

It’s especially clear compared to her connection with Marcello, who consistently prioritized Emily, stood by her side throughout her journey, and handled challenges maturely – something that Gabriel seemed unable to do.

Essentially, it seems clear that Gabriel is no longer necessary for the show’s plot, and the critique from Bravo could have served as a trigger for the writers to conclude Gabriel’s narrative.
