Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from season 5 of Emily in Paris. While Emily in Paris focuses on love lives, many fans agree its strongest connection isn’t romantic. The fifth season, recently released on Netflix, follows Emily as she lives in Rome, manages the new office of Agence Grateau, and begins a passionate relationship with Marcello Muratori, a wealthy cashmere company heir.
Okay, so this season of Emily in Paris was interesting. Usually, Emily and Gabriel’s on-again, off-again thing dominates everything, but this time around, it took a backseat a bit. There was still plenty of romance – Sylvie was, well, being Sylvie with a bunch of guys, Luc got caught in the most hilarious love triangle I’ve seen on the show, and Mindy had a surprise reunion. But honestly, even with all that going on, season 5 really centered on what I think is the show’s strongest romance yet. It was a nice change of pace!
The Season 5 Alfie Drama Tests Emily & Mindy’s Friendship In The Best Way

While Emily in Paris often centers on romance, it’s also a story about friendship. Although Emily and Camille’s relationship was complicated by their shared interest in Gabriel, Emily’s friendship with the talented Mindy Chen has consistently been a positive and heartwarming part of the show.
Season 5 really challenges Emily and Mindy’s friendship when Mindy starts a secret romance with Emily’s ex, Alfie. While Alfie and Emily have clearly moved on and don’t have feelings for each other anymore, Mindy dating him still feels complicated and awkward, given their close friendship.
Mindy and Alfie initially agree to keep their romance a secret, limiting it to their time in Rome. However, when their relationship continues after they return to Paris, they realize they need to tell Emily. Mindy hesitates, ultimately leading to a breakup between her and Alfie. Despite their efforts to keep it quiet, Emily eventually discovers the truth and is understandably upset.
The issue isn’t that Mindy dated Emily’s ex-boyfriend; Emily is actually hurt by the deception and the fact that Mindy kept it a secret. Unlike a character on Emily in Paris who dramatically confronted a similar situation, Emily handles things with surprising maturity. While she needs some space from Mindy at first, it’s just to process her own emotions.
Emily eventually realizes how much her friendships mean to her. She connects with Jake, an American working in Paris, and they bond over the difficulty of making real connections in a new city. However, Emily then understands that she’s already found the best connection possible – her friendship with Mindy. Although Mindy didn’t always handle Emily’s relationship with Alfie perfectly, Emily recognizes that nobody in Paris cares for her as much as her best friend does.
Why Emily & Mindy Are Emily In Paris’ Best Relationship

Over the five seasons of Emily in Paris, both Emily and Mindy have experienced many romances. However, unlike their fleeting relationships, their friendship has remained consistently strong. Their bond is the most enduring connection on the show, and they seemed like true soulmates from the very beginning.
I just love Emily and Mindy’s friendship! Sure, they spend a lot of time gossiping about their love lives – who doesn’t? – but what really gets me is how much they genuinely support each other’s ambitions. Emily is always there for Mindy’s performances, and even helps her land gigs through her own connections. And Mindy? She’s Emily’s biggest fan when it comes to her career, always cheering her on. It’s a really beautiful thing to see.
Mindy and Emily have a fantastic friendship that helps them both grow. Mindy inspires Emily to be more outgoing, and Emily encourages Mindy to pursue her goals and become more self-reliant. They’re both a little chaotic and share a fondness for questionable fashion, but their friendship is a major reason they’ve both developed as individuals.

Season 5 of Emily in Paris is particularly enjoyable because of the increased focus on Emily and Mindy’s relationship. Usually, their stories run separately, with them only connecting to discuss what’s happening in their lives. However, thanks to Alfie, they share a great storyline throughout the season. Even after resolving their issues, Emily and Mindy continue to spend a lot of time together, as their partners are working on a joint business venture.
Emily and Marcello, and Mindy and Nico, don’t have a strong romantic connection, but scenes of them on double dates are still fun because Emily and Mindy are such close friends. Perhaps the chance to hang out more with each other is what led Emily and Mindy to try and fix their friendship.
By the end of season 5 of Emily in Paris, Marcello seems to have left for good. Mindy and Nico are engaged, but many viewers doubt they’ll actually get married, especially since Alfie still has feelings for Mindy. If the show gets another season, Emily and Mindy’s love lives will likely remain complicated. However, their strong friendship proves that both are capable of finding happiness on their own.
