Emily in Paris Season 5 Leaves Things Open-Ended, But Maybe It Should Just End

The fifth season of Emily in Paris offers a satisfying conclusion while still leaving the door open for potential future stories. After following Emily’s travels from Rome to Paris and Venice, it feels like a natural time to end her storyline. Although I’d personally enjoy seeing more of Emily (Lily Collins) and Mindy (Ashley Park)’s adventures – both in love and at work with Agence Grateau – the show has likely reached its conclusion, and that’s perfectly fine.

Emily’s Love Life is Exhausting

The show Emily in Paris started as a story about a young woman experiencing life in Paris while working a short-term job. However, it quickly turned into a more dramatic and sensational series. While Emily did work on marketing projects, a lot of the show focuses on her exploring Parisian cafes, fashion, and romantic relationships—sometimes even while she should have been working.

Okay, let’s talk about Emily’s love life – it’s become a whirlwind! It all began with that charming neighbor, Gabriel, and after a bit of a fling and a split with her long-distance boyfriend, she quickly fell for Alfie. But things really got complicated with the addition of Marcello, who honestly dominated much of Season 5. Honestly, all the back-and-forth between these guys is starting to feel… exhausting. They’re all still hanging around, and keeping track of who she’s with (or was with) is becoming a full-time job. It’s less charming romance and more romantic fatigue at this point.

By the end of season five, Emily and Marcello had split up. Emily realized that life in a small Italian village just wasn’t for her – she missed the excitement of the city and being out and about. And viewers like watching her embrace that lifestyle! It became clear they weren’t a good match. Meanwhile, Sylvie seems to be encouraging Gabriel to reconnect with Emily, texting him that she’s now single and available.

Gabriel is still clearly in love with Emily, as shown by his bold move of sending her a postcard inviting her to Greece. He’d previously chased after her in Italy, only to find her happily with someone else and give up. Now, this invitation suggests his feelings haven’t faded. It would be a lovely conclusion to their complicated relationship if Emily accepted. However, the uncertainty of whether she’ll go is perhaps more compelling. Will she finally realize Gabriel is the one and join him in Greece? Or will she reject his advance and continue moving on with her life, not wanting a serious commitment?

The show’s open ending creates a sense of intrigue, letting viewers imagine their own conclusions. Gabriel’s knowing smile when he mails the postcard hints that he’s either satisfied with any outcome or sure he’ll get the response he’s hoping for. Regardless, fans are thrilled at the possibility of Emily and Gabriel ending up together, and the idea of leaving their story at a high note feels just right.

Other Loose Ends Would Be Collateral Damage

The show isn’t just about Emily, and other characters have important stories too. Mindy, for example, is getting married to Nicolas but is now having doubts, especially after Alfie hinted their brief romance in Italy meant more than just a fling. He seems to think she still has feelings for him, and their passionate moments are making her reconsider. Honestly, it makes me feel bad for Alfie – he always ends up chasing women who prioritize their careers or other relationships. Still, I’m okay with leaving his story unresolved for now.

Okay, I’m really hooked on Sylvie’s storyline! Seeing her finally decide to divorce Laurent was huge, especially with all the financial trouble he caused – she almost lost everything! And I’m so glad Minnie Driver’s character, Princess Jane, is now a partner at Agence Grateau. She’s hilarious and clearly will shake things up. Honestly, Jane is all about making a quick buck and promoting anything, which is the opposite of Sylvie’s classy approach. I’m really excited to see how that conflict plays out – it has the potential to be so much fun!

Things didn’t quite work out as planned with certain storylines. For example, in Season 4, they tried introducing a new character, Geneviève (played by Thalia Besson), to create conflict with Emily. However, her actions felt unnatural and irritating rather than meaningful, and ultimately didn’t add much to the show. The writers ended up removing the character halfway through Season 5, effectively resolving that storyline.

Honestly, after following Emily and Mindy’s relationships and wondering what’s next for Agence Grateau, it feels like everything else on the show is just…the same. Because of that, I wouldn’t be upset if they decided to end things here. It feels like a natural stopping point, you know?

Emily Might Not Be Moving On, But We Can

Emily in Paris is undeniably fun, and it’s become one of Netflix’s most enjoyable guilty pleasures. It’s easy to get lost in the fantasy of gorgeous people traveling through Europe, going to glamorous parties, and wearing incredible clothes – even Carrie Bradshaw would be impressed! However, the show has likely reached its natural conclusion and is starting to feel repetitive.

We’ve seen Emily go back and forth between love interests countless times, and the show keeps repeating the same storylines with her dating life and unwanted male attention. Earlier seasons were more centered on Emily’s work in marketing, which was the show’s strongest point. Now, with the constant focus on her romantic life, it feels more like a traditional soap opera than a story about a woman building her career. The show risks becoming predictable and losing its appeal if it doesn’t shift its focus.

I enjoyed the show and wouldn’t mind another season, but it’s not essential. The idea of Gabriel happily starting a new life, perhaps even finding love, feels like a satisfying conclusion – like the ending of a great romantic comedy, and that’s perfectly fine with me.
