Emily in Paris season 4 episode 4 recap: The Grey Area

As a seasoned gamer of life with a soft spot for romantic comedies, I must say that Emily in Paris has been an unexpected delight in my streaming roster this year. While I’m not exactly a fashionista like Emily, I can certainly relate to the tangled web of love and friendships she finds herself in.

Approaching the finale of season 4 part 1 of “Emily in Paris”, relationships are put under fresh strain, with the consequences of Emily’s decision at the masquerade ball and Sylvie’s job interview starting to unfold!

Warning: The following post contains spoilers from Emily in Paris season 4!

After selecting Gabriel at the masked ball, Emily and Gabriel found themselves unable to resist touching each other. However, the challenge lay in discovering a secluded spot where they could spend private time together.

The joyful pair tries to slip away into Emily’s place for some private moments as Camille, Sofia, and Gabriel are yet occupying Gabriel’s place. However, their plans for a good time abruptly end when they discover a tearful Mindy hidden under the blankets, crying following an argument with Nicolas. Upon further investigation, it is revealed that Nicolas had asked Mindy to accompany him to a gathering so they could be snapped together with his father. This suggestion made her feel complicit, leading to a heated disagreement between them.

Discussing Louis, following Sylvie’s interview revealing his misdeeds, he withdrew JVMA’s funding for Laurent’s club. Yet, Laurent expresses no anger and instead congratulates Sylvie on her courage. Unfortunately, it seems that not everyone shares this sentiment, as several of her clients have been canceling appointments because of the article. However, one beauty company is interested in marketing a high-end shampoo for older women, despite this situation.

Following their meeting, Sylvie refocuses on aiding Laurent and contacts her mother Heloise, often referred to as the Night Queen, who previously owned an iconic Paris nightclub. The objective is to revive Laurent’s aspirations by having Heloise invest in the club. Heloise consents, though the terms remain undisclosed. Later, Sylvie invites Emily to join her and Laurent for a meeting with Heloise to inspect the location that once housed her mother’s nightclub. During this visit, Emily suggests transforming the club into an indoor beach venue.

Three’s company, four’s a crowd

Emily expects a one-on-one meeting with Gabriel, yet finds herself in a group setting that includes Camille and Sofia as well, at what turns out to be a dessert tasting event. They all enjoy the sweets, but Camille expresses her opinion that they’ve tasted better desserts before, which sparks a reminiscent conversation between Camille and Gabriel. This leaves Emily and Sofia feeling slightly uncomfortable.

Initially, Gabriel regrets not informing Emily about others joining them, but she confides that she missed having private moments with him alone. With this in mind, Gabriel escorts her to the rooftop of a building for a romantic picnic under candlelight, offering a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower. As events unfold, their peaceful date transforms into an intimate moment on the roof.

Emily’s evening with Gabriel culminates in a creative proposal for the shampoo brand: Emily suggests making “living in the gray area” their campaign theme. After presenting the idea, Sylvie expresses surprise that Emily is comfortable with ambiguity, given Americans’ preference for clarity. However, Emily appears to be grappling with her current circumstances as she responds that she’s trying to adapt.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my feelings when Emily comes home, only to learn from Camille and Sofia about their fruitless search for an apartment. The frustration mounts as it seems like Camille isn’t eager to secure her own place. Impatient and determined, I find myself rushing off to speak with the landlady, ready to declare that three individuals are residing in Gabriel’s apartment – a clear violation of our lease agreement.

Laurent’s club preview is a hit but comes with a few surprises

After pouring a considerable amount of work into it, the idea of transforming the club into a mini beach surpassed all predictions, making Laurent’s club preview one of the most significant events of the season. However, this doesn’t imply that there weren’t unexpected twists to maintain the excitement throughout the process.

The first big surprise comes when Julien shows up and warns Sylvie that Louis is planning to retaliate against her and is looking for some dirt he can use which prompts him to quit. He then brings a little surprise in the form of Grégory Elliott Duprée, who arrives to show off his new collection of – ahem – penis pants which was inspired by Louis and the concept that men can’t keep it in their pants. This was the very fashion line that JVMA tried to shut down earlier in the episode, and Julien decides to bring them to the club knowing the photographs will be all over the papers and make Louis furious.

Indeed, it’s impossible to imagine a club opening without some tunes, and we were lucky enough to enjoy a performance by Mindy and the band playing “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” As Luc remarks on how adorable Mindy and Benoit are together, they nearly sealed their act with a kiss. Fortunately for Mindy, Nicolas popped up at the party just as she stepped off stage.

I shared with her that I’ve made it clear to the board that, given my father’s position, I can’t be part of JVMA. What took me aback was their suggestion for Louis to relinquish his role so Nicholas could step up instead. As a gamer, it feels like I’m playing a game where the rules keep changing!

At the close of our episode, Gabriel appears and Emily confesses her true feelings, explaining she can’t tolerate ambiguity. She admits their rooftop encounter was a solitary instance, expressing her need for boundaries and structure. This leads to her revealing her intention to inform the landlady about the three inhabitants in his apartment. Interestingly, Gabriel had already done the same, but in Emily’s world of Emily in Paris, this revelation doesn’t exactly bring relief.

Camille informed the landlady about having three people in their apartment, and she was told about an empty apartment located between Emily’s and Gabriel’s apartments, which they decided to take. This news left Sofia upset as well, expressing to Emily that she wasn’t surprised at all by Camille’s decision to stay close to Gabriel. It seems like Sofia is beginning to feel excluded in her relationship, and it looks like Emily might soon share similar feelings – though she’s been questioning things already.
