Emily in Paris season 4 episode 1 recap: Point Break

As a seasoned observer of human dynamics and relationships, I must say that this latest episode of Emily in Paris has been a rollercoaster ride. It seems like each character is grappling with their own set of challenges, be it personal or professional.

The fourth season of “Emily in Paris” has started, albeit partially, and the premiere episode swiftly delves into the aftermath of the dramatic events from the season 3 finale. In that climactic ending, Camille bolted from Gabriel at the altar, further complicating Emily’s relationship with Alfie by revealing her agreement with Emily and hinting that both Emily and Gabriel still harbor feelings for each other. To add more fuel to the fire, Gabriel announced a pregnancy surprise at the end of season 3, explaining that he and Camille were in such a hurry to wed because Camille was expecting!

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement as we plunge headfirst into the thrilling world of our favorite series once more, barely catching our breath after the thought-provoking events of season 3. To my surprise, we find ourselves starting anew with Emily, engrossed in a TikTok video crafted by Camille’s brother, offering a perspective that doesn’t necessarily flatter Emily’s image.

WARNING: Major spoilers for Emily in Paris season 4 episode 1 are coming!

As the new season unfolds, I discover that Alfie has completely cut off Emily, whereas she remains unconvinced about Gabriel as a viable option. However, it doesn’t take much time before Emily and Gabriel find themselves in close proximity this season. This happens after Emily assists him with grocery shopping and begins to prepare meals for him to help his healing injured hand.

Emily confides in Gabriel that she hasn’t heard from Alfie, and Gabriel shares his own predicament with Camille, who hasn’t reached out since their broken wedding. Although he can’t do much about Camille, Gabriel expresses a desire to assist Emily and Alfie in resolving their issues. However, based on what we’ve seen across the three seasons of the show, it seems that things might not work out between them.

Emily’s blend of personal and professional matters eventually leads to her downfall, as she’s left with little opportunity to escape from her personal troubles when Ami proposes using her and Alfie in their upcoming perfume ad campaign following the popular hot air balloon promotion last season. Emily attempts to divert the situation by suggesting a kiss cam idea, but this only leads to the Ami team asking her and Alfie to attend a tennis event and seal the brand event with a closing kiss. When Sylvie learns about a circulating TikTok video, her solution is straightforward: resolve this issue promptly and ensure Alfie’s presence at the event.

It appears that what seemed simple has turned out to be quite challenging. Upon spotting the poster of them both at the gym, Alfie ends his silence by phoning Ami to confront her for not informing him about the poster’s existence. He also demands that she take care of having it removed.

Afterward, she heads to the gym where Alfie was training, but it turns out not everything goes smoothly there either. Her arrival disrupts Alfie while he was sparring in the ring, leading him to take a hit to the face that knocked him down. As Emily helps apply ice to his wounded face, she promises to fix her mistake and asks Alfie to discuss what transpired at the wedding with her. However, Alfie seems overwhelmed by events and needs some time to sort things out. Given that his deepest fears were exposed in front of everyone at the wedding, this isn’t surprising, and Emily’s attempts to console him that she didn’t mean for him to get hurt fall short.

Concerned about potentially ruining another one of Julien’s projects, Emily brainstorms a contingency plan for the upcoming event, anticipating Alfie might not attend. She even attempts to create an avatar model for the campaign, but it proves unfeasible – something she herself acknowledges. She alerts Julien about Alfie’s probable absence and pitches the avatar idea as an alternative, yet Julien remains unconvinced and reiterates that this is the last time Emily will meddle with his projects. True to his word, he eventually leaves to work for JVMA instead.

In the heat of Emily’s campaign turmoil, I found myself at Gabriel’s restaurant, only to discover a confrontation unfolding between us. I accused Gabriel of deceit, explaining that his denial about his relationship with Emily felt like a stab in the back given our friendship. Gabriel defended himself by asserting that nothing transpired between them during their dating phase. I pressed him further, asking if he harbored feelings for Emily, to which he responded ambiguously, stating that his emotions towards her were irrelevant and that he would not interfere – a response that, let’s face it, didn’t exactly fill me with confidence.

When the spotlight falls on the kiss cam, it seems like Emily is on the verge of causing trouble, only for Alfie to appear. He admits he may have reacted too harshly and regrets his hasty departure. Alfie confesses his ongoing fear of having to watch his back and losing Emily to Gabriel. Emily reassures Alfie that she had feelings for Gabriel at one time, but her affection lies with him and they can’t pretend their relationship. Unfortunately, Alfie believes he can’t move past the past and tells Emily they’ve reached an end. Their kiss under the kiss cam is a farewell, not a romantic gesture.

Upon returning from the gathering, Emily receives another shocking piece of news when Gabriel discloses that he had a conversation with Camille’s mother. It appears that Camille has gone missing, and no one has caught sight or heard from her since the wedding, implying that she might be missing!

Mindy and Nicolas hit a roadblock

In another part of the show, Mindy, Benoit, and Étienne come face-to-face with the Eurovision representatives, but their aspirations are suddenly threatened as they discover they must personally cover all costs associated with the event.

In her quest to maintain her ambition for Eurovision, Mindy encounters another unexpected obstacle when she has an uncomfortable and unfavorable encounter with Nicholas and his father. This encounter takes place at a tennis event, where Mindy unintentionally overhears a conversation between Nicholas and his dad that can be described as body-shaming towards Mindy. What makes this situation even more distressing is that Nicholas fails to intervene or defend Mindy during the exchange.

Following her accusation that he made her feel undervalued, Mindy firmly tells Nicolas that nobody will dictate her clothing choices, and she exits in a fury.

Enraged, Mindy opts to resell the tennis attire that Nicolas had purchased for her, earning a substantial sum that significantly boosts her funds intended for Eurovision.

Sylvie has a major decision coming her way this season

In the debut of season 4 of “Emily in Paris,” Sylvie is seen managing numerous tasks, one of them being Antoine’s upcoming fragrance release: Crystal Heart. Following his divorce from Catherine, Antoine is under immense pressure to ensure its success, and he enlists Sylvie’s assistance to make it happen. Initially, she expresses doubts about the name, but later, after Alfie informs him that the kiss at the tennis match was not romantic but symbolized heartbreak, he changes it to Heartbreak instead.

Apart from her own reservations, she’s additionally assisting Laurent in readying his new club for its grand opening, even though he’s collaborating with Louis de Lion – the CEO of JVMA who shares a complex past with Sylvie. Her apprehension about Laurent’s association with Louis escalates when she learns that there’s a developing story about Louis de Lion and his handling of female colleagues in the workplace.

As someone who has been in a similar situation myself, I can empathize with Sylvie’s predicament this season. The choice she faces – whether to reveal the truth about Louis – is not an easy one. It could potentially disrupt everything that Laurent has worked tirelessly to build. In my own life, I’ve learned that honesty is crucial, but sometimes it comes at a high cost. So, Sylvie must weigh the consequences carefully before making her decision. I wish her the best of luck and hope she finds clarity soon.
