Emily Atack joins Wolf Hall star for next lead TV role after Rivals success
As a seasoned gamer with years of immersing myself in the worlds of various narratives, I can confidently say that the upcoming series, “The Rumour,” has piqued my interest like none other. The stellar cast, led by Emily Atack, Joanne Whalley, and Rachel Shenton, promises an intriguing tale that resonates with the power dynamics and secrets often found in small towns – a theme I’ve encountered countless times while navigating the virtual landscapes of my favorite games.
Actress Emily Atack is teaming up with Joanne Whalley, known for “Wolf Hall,” in a brand-new drama series after the acclaim garnered by “Rivals.
Rachel Shenton, an Oscar-winning actress known for her role in “All Creatures Great and Small,” will join the cast of Channel 5’s “The Rumour.” This series tells the story of a woman seeking a new beginning in a peaceful town, only to find herself embroiled with a circle of mothers.
According to Variety’s synopsis, when Joanna discovers an online rumor about a child murderer residing in the town, she cleverly uses it to gain favor with other mothers at the school gate. As the gossip escalates, apprehensions rise, and Joanna becomes ensnared in a tangled web of secrets and anxiety.
In a delicate balance between safeguarding her son and dealing with the escalating tension in the community, Joanna finds herself grappling with discerning fact from rumor. As friendships become strained and feelings intensify, the line separating trust from apprehension becomes increasingly indistinct.
This TV show is inspired by a book penned by Lesley Kara, with screenplay crafted by Giula Sandler (of “The House Across the Street”) and skillfully directed by Richard Clark from “Doctor Who”.
The movie titled “The Rumour” features an impressive cast that includes Samuel Anderson from the series “Doctor Who“, Ellie Haddington who starred in “Enola Holmes“, Lucy Speed known for her role in “Unforgotten“, Liza Sadovy of “A Real Pain“, Carryl Thomas from “Silo“, Tamzin Griffin, Alex Waldmann, and Okezie Morro.
She expressed great enthusiasm about taking on the role of Joanna, stating, “This play, The Rumour, delves into a woman’s unraveling as she tirelessly chases the truth. She’s quite relatable, and the ensemble is superb. It’s a pleasure to collaborate with so many talented women.
Paul Testar, Channel 5’s drama commissioning editor, remarked: “The Rumour is an engaging drama that delves into the destructive force of secrets and rumors in a close-knit community. Featuring Lesley Kara’s compelling narrative and an impressive ensemble cast, this series offers nail-biting tension and an intriguing examination of the delicate balance between trust and apprehension.
After recently appearing in the popular Disney+ series “Rivals,” where she played the character Sarah Stratton, the show is now featuring her as its leading actress.
The Rumour is slated to air on Channel 5 in 2025.
