Emilio Estevez Reveals St. Elmo’s Fire Was a ‘Nightmare’!
On the set of the 1985 classic movie St. Elmo’s Fire, Emilio Estevez publicly criticized director Joel Schumacher as being difficult to work with, using the term ‘nightmare’.
The movie about a young adult, featuring Estevez, Demi Moore, and Rob Lowe, could potentially have a follow-up – however, Estevez seems content to move forward from his professional collaboration with Schumacher.
In my line of work as a lifestyle expert, I’ve learned that every encounter, even those with challenging individuals like the filmmaker, offers valuable lessons. For me, working with him was a profound teaching moment about the importance of treating colleagues with respect and kindness – something I strive to practice in all my professional relationships moving forward.
During his interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Estevez asserted that Schumacher exhibited bullying behavior and was significantly different from the director John Hughes, who helmed The Breakfast Club.
Responding to a question regarding the most challenging direction he’d received, Emilio said with a chuckle, “Tell him to ‘enjoy himself!’ Joel Schumacher certainly knew how to make an impact!
estevez experienced a slight jarring transition while collaborating with the unpredictable director, having previously worked with a composed and understanding Hughes just a year prior.

Transitioning from the cooperative, mentoring, and composed John Hughes, who was also a good listener, to the volatile and insecure Joel, who was difficult to work with on set, and displayed bullying behavior.
1984 marked a significant turning point for me. When such an incident occurred simultaneously, I made a promise to myself that I would never again address actors in that manner if given the opportunity to direct. It was an invaluable lesson for any aspiring actor-turned-director like myself. Thanks, Joel!
St. Elmo’s Fire centered around the lives of seven graduates from Georgetown University, with Mare Winningham, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy among its cast members.
The film was dismally-reviewed but earned $37.8M from a $10M budget at the global box office.
Despite not finding it pleasant to work with Schumacher, Moore still praised him for taking a risk on her and aiding her in maintaining sobriety during last year’s Brats documentary.
Or,
Even though Emilio didn’t appreciate collaborating with Schumacher, Moore commended him for giving her an opportunity and supporting her recovery journey in the Brats documentary of last year.
She clarified that he went out on a limb for her, as my box office appeal wasn’t particularly strong at the time.
At the onset, we were all embarking on this journey. Frankly, I hadn’t earned his unwavering loyalty yet. In fact, they had hired someone to stay with me around the clock, providing sobriety support during the entire filming of the movie.
In 2020, when Joel passed away at the age of 80, Demi poured out heartfelt accolades for him and expressed gratitude for his role in aiding her through her battles with addiction.

Moore shared on Instagram that working with Joel Schumacher on St. Elmo’s Fire was a crucial milestone, not only for his professional life, but also for his personal journey towards healing and recovery.
I’ll always cherish the tough love and opportunity he gave me. His bold, vibrant personality will be deeply missed. May you find peace, Joel.
It seems a sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire is currently being developed, as Lowe mentioned to Entertainment Tonight earlier.

Previously, Lowe disclosed to the media outlet that he’s been working on a follow-up movie for the film, inspired by the popularity of the Brats documentary.
According to the Parks and Rec actor, discussions regarding the project have been ongoing for approximately four months now.
The buzz surrounding ‘Brats’ has certainly grown, but given its extremely premature stage, we have a long way to go before we can fully appreciate what it might become.
