Emilio Estevez Reveals ‘Mighty Ducks 4’ Script Disney Rejected – What Could Have Been!

Despite Emilio Estevez, who wrote the script for potential fourth installment of “The Mighty Ducks”, Disney chose not to accept it. The sports-themed franchise, which started with its first movie in 1992, now includes three films and two series – one animated and another live-action. However, the live-action series titled “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” was terminated by Disney+ in 2023, and later removed from their streaming service entirely.

In conversation with Josh Horowitz on his podcast “Happy Sad Confused,” Estevez shared that he wrote a script for “The Mighty Ducks 4.” The main character, Coach Gordon, would have been drawn back into action, this time coaching a roller derby team and turning them into an expansion team for the Professional Women’s Hockey League. Unfortunately, Disney decided not to proceed with the concept. Here’s what Estevez discussed about it:

I additionally penned Mighty Ducks 4. My intention behind this was to rectify the missteps that transpired during the Game Changers series…a screenplay, indeed. This script brought back Coach Bombay, who was persuaded by Josh Jackson’s character and Kenan Thompson’s character to return and coach a fresh team – an expansion team, specifically for the Professional Women’s Hockey League. Consequently, it would be an all-female team. Upon rediscovering Bombay, he is found coaching roller derby. He declares, “My girls are coming with me. They deserve a chance.” It was endearing, modern, and hip, once more embodying the zeitgeist. Unfortunately, Disney opted not to move forward with this concept.

What Estevez’s Mighty Ducks 4 Idea Would Have Meant For The Series

Gordon Would Have Gotten The Spotlight Once Again

In his acting career, Estevez had a minor role in the movie D3: The Mighty Ducks which marked his last significant appearance in the series. However, he appeared as a prominent character in Game Changers season 1. It’s been a while since Estevez played the main coach of the series, a role that could have been reinstated if his ideas for The Mighty Ducks 4 had come to fruition. Estevez is well-versed in filmmaking, having recently written and directed movies such as The Way (2010) and The Public (2018). These films garnered mostly positive feedback from critics.

Nevertheless, it appears that Disney’s franchise of The Mighty Ducks may be in a standstill, as their latest revitalization effort is no longer accessible on the streaming platform where it debuted. This presents an opportunity for a new beginning, which Charlie T. Estevez could have spearheaded by tapping into the nostalgic aspects of the series. However, it seems that the company holding the franchise’s rights might be exploring alternative paths, despite Estevez already having a script in hand. If there are plans for The Mighty Ducks beyond this, they remain unannounced.

Our Take On Estevez’s Mighty Ducks 4 Script

The Perfect Evolution For The Series

Estevez’s script proposes an engaging sequel for the ice hockey series, featuring female protagonists as Gordon rediscovers his passion for coaching after a long absence. The narrative could expand by incorporating a professional hockey league, potentially giving it a more complex and mature feel compared to previous installments in the franchise. Regrettably, it seems that The Mighty Ducks 4 may not materialize from these concepts if Disney decides to produce another film in the series.
