Emilia Pérez Director’s Emotional Tribute to Controversial Co-Star at BAFTAs Shocks Audience!

At the 2025 BAFTA ceremony on Sunday, film director Jacques Audiard, notably Emilia Pérez, offered a touching homage to the troubled actress Karla Sofía Gascón in his acceptance speech.

The French film director, aged 72, playfully mentioned that he could have kissed the actress who was absent, during his acceptance speech for the award for ‘Best Film Not In The English Language’. This remark came shortly after Zoe Saldaña, who had just won ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her role in the same movie, came close to mentioning her co-star who has been a subject of controversy.

52-year-old Spanish actress Karla found herself excluded from the BAFTA guest list following a resurgence of controversial posts on her social media, which were perceived as racist, homophobic, and body-shaming in nature, igniting a storm of accusations against her.

In his address, Jacques expressed gratitude towards the film’s cast first, then concluded by acknowledging Karla Sofia with a gesture of affection by saying, ‘And I want to thank you, Karla Sofia, with a kiss.’

As I stand here, humbly accepting this honor, I’d like to take a moment to express my gratitude to the many individuals who have supported me on this journey. Among them is my dear friend Karla, whose unwavering encouragement and friendship have meant the world to me.

Previously, the director labeled the actress’ tweets as “unforgivable” and “malicious,” indicating that they had impacted their working dynamics.

He told Deadline: ‘The bond of trust we built, the exceptional camaraderie we had on set, which was rooted in trust. However, when you encounter something a person has said that’s filled with hatred and deserving of being despised, it’s inevitable for such a relationship to be impacted.’

Before adding: ‘It’s as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable.’

Karla found herself facing criticism following the discovery of her past social media comments, which included criticisms directed towards Islam, George Floyd, Adele, and her fellow actor Selena.

After facing criticism, the team associated with Emilia Perez – both the cast and the production crew – have chosen to disassociate themselves from her, along with Netflix who was involved in the project.

In her emotional address, Zoe was abruptly taken off-camera due to her use of strong language, as she exclaimed “darn, darn, darn” when the rapid countdown put her under pressure.

I, overwhelmed with emotion, gratefully received the award, acknowledging it was incredibly validating and an immense honor for me – someone who was once advised by dialect coaches that my British accent wouldn’t succeed. Yet, here I am, standing triumphant.

Listing off her thank yous, Zoe said: ‘Oh my god I’m getting a countdown. F*** f*** f***!’

She was all smiles as she accepted the award from Colman Domingo and Adam Pearson. 

Despite a diverse range of opinions due to its screening, the Mexican film boasting Selena Gomez among its stars, has garnered an impressive 11 nominations.

During the evening, Zoe was nothing less than breathtaking on the glittering red carpet, where she wore an exquisite black lace dress with a dramatic flair.

She displayed her stunning physique in a semi-transparent outfit, featuring an attention-grabbing off-shoulder neckline and a large mesh collar that stood out.

With well-arranged curls cascading down, Zoe gracefully stood tall in a pair of high heels, adorning herself with a stunning silver necklace that sparkled.

On that splendid evening, I found myself immersed in the grandeur of Britain’s cinematic spectacle, where the esteemed David Tennant graced us as the master of ceremonies. A host of distinguished guest presenters were also part of this magical night, ensuring awards were gracefully bestowed throughout.

While Jesse Eisenberg, aged 41, accepted the Best Supporting Actor award that his co-star Kieran Culkin presented to him for his leading role in A Real Pain.

Grabbing Kieran’s trophy, which he acknowledged as being his fifth award of the season given to him, Jesse humorously remarked, “Well, my suspicions were correct all along… it seems our lives share some common ground, but his has a 27% higher quality than mine.

Jesse, not only did he direct and act in the film “A Real Pain,” but he also won the award for Best Original Screenplay and delivered a heartfelt speech during the ceremony.

In an unexpected turn of events, I found myself the runner-up in the movie competition. Yet, it seems fate had a different plan all along. You see, I hadn’t penned a single word, for I never anticipated this victory. But now, I feel compelled to share this recognition with my beloved wife, who graciously chose to stay at home, believing that my chances were slim.
