As a long-time movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours in the darkened halls of cinemas, I must admit that this year’s Golden Globe nominations have left me both excited and bewildered. The diversity and creativity showcased across all categories are truly remarkable, especially in the TV series nominees such as “The Bear,” “Hacks,” and “Only Murders in the Building.” It seems like the golden statuette is acknowledging the brilliant work of newer shows, which is heartening to see.
On Monday morning, Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut revealed the nominees for the Globes awards, which will air on CBS and be streamed live on Paramount+ starting January 5th. Despite past controversies and organizational changes, the Globes are making a comeback, with an impressive lineup of celebrities vying for awards this year. Notable nominees include Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Denzel Washington, Ariana Grande, Glen Powell, and Selena Gomez.
The youthful television series “The Apprentice,” starring Donald Trump, received nominations for its lead performances, given by Sebastian Stan portraying Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn. The president-elect has referred to “The Apprentice” as a “politically revolting smear campaign” created by “despicable individuals.
It’s yet to be determined how significantly the latest presidential election will impact Hollywood’s awards season. During the initial ceremony, the Gotham Awards, Trump was neither explicitly mentioned nor directly addressed, but there were occasional hints. Meanwhile, Stan garnered a nomination for his role in the dark comedy “A Different Man” on Monday.
In contrast to previous years where Oppenheimer and, to some extent, Barbie were the undisputed heavyweights in Globes nominations, this year no clear frontrunner has emerged. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the Golden Globes, doesn’t always align with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a larger group that better represents the film industry. However, a win at the Globes can significantly boost a movie’s chances, providing valuable ammunition for awards campaigns.
I’m finding myself drawn to the acclaimed work of Emilia Pérez, as Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” has garnered seven nominations, among them best picture, drama, and acting nods for Adrian Brody and Guy Pearce. This upcoming film, distributed by A24, is remarkably bold, boasting a runtime of three-and-a-half hours, complete with an intermission.
Right after it came Edward Berger’s film, “Conclave,” where Ralph Fiennes played the role of a cardinal responsible for leading the conclave to select a new pope. This movie received six nominations, including those for Best Picture, Drama, and acting performances by Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini.
Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film “Anora,” featuring Mikey Madison as a sex worker in Brooklyn who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, was recognized with five nominations. These include categories like Best Picture, Best Comedy or Musical, and individual acting awards for Madison (Best Female Actor) and Yura Borisov (Best Supporting Actor).
This upcoming Golden Globe Awards will be led by comedian Nikki Glaser, who has earned her own nomination for the best stand-up special. CBS, which started broadcasting the Globes last year under a new agreement, is hoping that Glaser delivers a better performance than last year’s host, Jo Koy, whose presentation received much criticism.
Here’s details from the nominations:

What’s new this year?
This year, the Globes has retained two fresh categories: the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award, as well as the Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy on Television. For the Lifetime Achievement Awards, there’s a small change – Ted Danson will receive the Carol Burnett Award, while Viola Davis will get the Cecil B. DeMille Award. These honors will be presented during a gala dinner on Friday, January 3rd, which is a few days before the Globes ceremony itself.
What’s the deal with the Golden Globes, anyway?
Despite the Globes often being dramatic, they seem to have found some peace recently for the troubled awards organization. This year’s Globes marked their first event after the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and its takeover by Dick Clark Productions and Todd Boehly’s private equity firm Eldridge Industries. However, earlier this autumn, doubts were raised when former members of the HFPA sent a letter to the California Attorney General’s office, expressing concerns about the legitimacy of the acquisition.
