Recent Rotten Tomatoes scores suggest Emilia Clarke’s new series, Ponies, might be as well-received as Game of Thrones, the show that made her famous for her role as Daenerys Targaryen. Now, she’s starring in a Peacock spy thriller alongside Haley Lu Richardson, playing one of two women in 1970s Moscow who secretly work for the CIA.
The show Ponies initially received a very positive score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, which has since increased to 95%. All eight episodes of the first season were released on January 15th. This marks Clarke’s second television role since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, following her appearance in the 2023 Marvel series Secret Invasion, which didn’t receive favorable reviews.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, Emilia Clarke’s new show, Ponies, has received higher ratings than Game of Thrones. While Game of Thrones still has a very strong overall score of 89%, Ponies is currently rated higher. However, Game of Thrones remains more popular with a wider audience—85% of viewers liked it, compared to 70% for Ponies—suggesting that Ponies appeals to a smaller group.

The final season of Game of Thrones significantly impacted the show’s overall rating. At its peak, Game of Thrones consistently scored higher than Ponies. Seasons 2, 3, and 4 of Game of Thrones all achieved a 97% or 96% rating. Every season except the last one (season 8, with a 55% rating) received a score of 90% or above. Ponies, currently, only has one season.
If “Ponies” gets a second season, it will have a chance to establish itself as a consistently strong show and build a larger following. This could allow for a better comparison to “Game of Thrones,” though it’s unlikely to reach the same level of worldwide popularity. Despite its imperfections, “Game of Thrones” remains one of the most impactful and highly regarded television series of all time.
I’m really excited about Ponies because it feels like a big return for Emilia Clarke! She hasn’t really had a major hit since Game of Thrones. Her last show didn’t do so well, and while she’s been in a few movies like Last Christmas, The Pod Generation, and The Twits, none of them really stuck. But Ponies is getting amazing reviews, and it’s a great sign that this project will really let her shine!
Haley Lu Richardson, who appears alongside Clarke in Ponies, is also known for her roles in Five Feet Apart and The White Lotus. Both Clarke and Richardson have the potential to become strongly associated with Ponies as the show develops.
