Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson’s “deeply ridiculous” Christmas movie gets new UK streaming home

The Christmas movie starring Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson, previously described as “deeply ridiculous,” is now available to stream on Disney+ in the UK. Called Last Christmas, the film is directed by Paul Feig and features Clarke as Kate, a disillusioned Londoner working as an elf in a Christmas shop run by Michelle Yeoh, who plays a character known as “Santa.”

Kate’s world changes completely when she meets Tom, a charming and kind stranger with a hidden past. Their connection blossoms into a Christmas romance as London celebrates the holidays, and Kate finds herself falling for him.

The romantic comedy Last Christmas takes its name from the popular 1984 Wham! song and is filled with music by George Michael.

Thompson not only stars in the project but also co-wrote the script with Bryony Kimmings. She and her husband, Greg Wise, collaborated on developing the story.

The 2019 film Last Christmas didn’t receive positive reviews and currently holds a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie is an over-the-top, silly, and surprisingly star-studded holiday spectacle.

Okay, so this movie? Let’s just say the filmmakers threw in George Michael and Wham! songs like they were grabbing random tracks off a gas station mixtape – zero thought or care put into it. It honestly felt really cheap and disrespectful to the music.

Critics weren’t impressed with Last Christmas. The Evening Standard called it condescending, nonsensical, and ridiculous, and The Independent described it as a lavish romantic comedy that felt similar to a low-budget Hallmark movie.

Even though critics didn’t love it, the holiday movie has been popular with audiences. It currently has an 81% audience score, and many viewers say its silliness is part of what makes it enjoyable.

You know, I totally get why some people think critics miss the point with Christmas movies! The best ones aren’t about being groundbreaking cinema – they’re supposed to be pure, cozy comfort. It’s like being wrapped up in the biggest, most delicious mug of hot chocolate imaginable, piled high with marshmallows and whipped cream. That’s the feeling they should give you, and honestly, that’s all that matters!

Honestly, this movie wasn’t groundbreaking or anything, but that’s exactly what I loved about it! It had just the right amount of cheesy, predictable fun – perfect for getting you in the Christmas spirit. It was just so heartwarming!

One viewer said the movie was really sweet and heartwarming – exactly what you want in a Christmas film! They admitted to crying a lot at the end, like a little kid. They understand it might not appeal to everyone, but they absolutely loved it.

Last Christmas is available to stream now on Disney+.
