Elvis Presley’s watch and John Lennon’s suit fetch big bucks at Goldin auction

Elvis Presley’s worn Omega wristwatch, gifted to him by Johnny Cash, sold for $103,700 this week.

Goldin, known for conducting auctions of notable sports and pop culture memorabilia, recently sold a timepiece with engravings during its debut music memorabilia auction. This event concluded on Wednesday night. Among other high-priced items were:

1. A custom suit made by D.A. Millings & Son that John Lennon wore in 1963, fetching $102,480.
2. An autographed copy of Led Zeppelin’s album “Presence,” which sold for $19,520.
3. George Harrison’s sunglasses that went for $47,590.

Additionally, Goldin established a new record for the sale of a Type 1 photo (photos developed from original negatives within two years after they were taken) featuring rapper Tupac Shakur. This particular photo was sold for $10,370 as per the auction house’s report.

Despite the fact that sports trading cards and auctions make up the core business of Goldin, the company is expanding into the realm of pop culture, according to Dave Amerman, the head of revenue. This shift has been showcased in Goldin’s Netflix series, “King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch,” which debuted in 2023 and has now been renewed for a third season.

Amerman told The Times that they noticed they have a lot of musical products contributing to our pop culture sales, so they decided to create a unique event to focus solely on these items.

Movies

In the initial day of Propstore’s Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction on Wednesday, the prop medal that was presented to Luke Skywalker (portrayed by Mark Hamill) in the original “Star Wars” movie fetched a price of $378,000.

A significant portion of Beatles artifacts were owned by Chris Agajanian, a music promoter who has been amassing this collection over four decades. Agajanian possesses approximately 2,000 pieces of Beatles memorabilia, and many items from the Goldin auction have accompanying signed letters verifying their authenticity.

The auction of the music featured not just the songs, but over 500 concert posters as well, each authenticated by the Certified Guaranty Company, a pioneer in grading comic books. The themes of these posters varied widely, encompassing acts like the Grateful Dead and the Beatles, all the way to Sonic Youth and Blink-182.

In 2020, Goldin auctioned off one of the costliest albums ever produced – a copy of “Double Fantasy” by Lennon and Yoko Ono, which John Lennon had inadvertently signed for his assassin, Mark David Chapman, moments before he was fatally shot in 1980. The album fetched a staggering $900,000 at the auction.

In the realm of cinema memorabilia, I’ve come across some truly remarkable pieces, but none quite like the 1979 Star Wars prototype action figure of Boba Fett, the legendary bounty hunter. This unique collector’s item was auctioned off for an astonishing sum exceeding a million dollars back in 2024, making it the most expensive toy ever sold at auction to date. It’s fascinating to witness such a significant piece of cinematic history change hands.

Goldin’s current Hollywood Props & Memorabilia auction includes notable items such as Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones whip, an original Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet prototype, and George Reeves’ Superman costume. The bidding ends on August 6th.
