Elusive Samurai is about to become your Demon Slayer replacement
As a die-hard fan of both Demon Slayer and Elusive Samurai, I can confidently say that these two shows have taken my love for historical Japan to a whole new level! While I still hold a special place in my heart for Tanjiro Kamado and his demon-slaying adventures, the elusive Hōjō Tokiyuki has certainly stolen my attention lately.
Elusive Samurai spoilers follow.
Demon Slayer truly justified its title when it outperformed other shows dramatically upon its return in 2019. In this process, Koyoharu Gotouge’s narrative significantly contributed to the resurgence of shōnen anime genre, which is characterized by historical settings where a routine sword fight was commonplace.
Five years later, “The Elusive Samurai” is still soaring on that familiar banner, making its mark in the competitive landscape during its debut season. Originating from a manga by Yusei Matsui, who’s known for his work on “Assassination Classroom”, “The Elusive Samurai” follows the tale of a historical figure named Hōjō Tokiyuki, but with an abundance of fantastical elements thrown in.
In the 1300s, a young noble, who was the heir to Japan’s shogunate, struggled to reclaim his family’s prestige after a traitorous act by a warrior named Ashikaga Takauji led to the downfall of the Hōjō clan. Remarkably, Tokiyuki survived this ordeal, owing largely to his extraordinary talent for evading capture. Regardless of how swift or nimble his adversaries might be, Tokiyuki was always quicker and more agile in response. In a word, he was elusive.
In the anime titled “Demon Slayer“, Tanjiro Kamado experiences a tragic loss at the outset when his family is killed by monstrous creatures, though these are of an otherworldly nature. Remarkably, his sister, Nezuko, manages to survive, but she undergoes a transformation into a demon, barely retaining her human essence.
Similar to the enigmatic Samurai tale, Demon Slayer is likewise set in Japan’s bygone era, but Tanjiro’s odyssey unfolds in the early 1900s instead of centuries past. Akin to Tokiyuki, Tanjiro too possesses an extraordinary talent to enhance his swordsmanship. With a remarkably acute sense of smell, this demon slayer can detect demons from a distance of a mile and discern their strength by the decay in their odor.
Initially, neither of these young warriors stand out as exceptionally skilled fighters, but their unwavering enthusiasm and peculiar talents set them on a path to become legends in the making. From the beginning, it’s clear that Tokiyuki has a special destiny, as revealed by Yorishige Suwa – a divine figure with prophetic abilities. This is why Tokiyuki’s guardian fights relentlessly to shield him and help restore his family’s power, knowing full well that the future holds greatness for this young man because of its positive impact.
In addition to other supernatural elements, the character of Elusive Samurai incorporates formidable warriors such as Tokiyuki’s adversaries. One of these foes has an extraordinary ability akin to Tanjiro’s sense of smell, while another is perpetually enveloped by ants. Although not as alarming as the high-ranking demons often seen in Demon Slayer, both series exhibit a significant amount of shared disturbing characteristics in this aspect.
Battles, featuring monsters and swords, are a captivating feature across every series, particularly shining in Demon Slayer. It excels at crafting exhilarating fights that rank among the most tense ever filmed on screen. Ufotable stands out in this aspect, but Cloverworks, creators of Elusive Samurai, also showcase unique traditional art styles to distinguish their series and keep it engaging.
In Tokiyuki’s story, unique elements like shadow puppetry and bold oil pastels add depth to the narrative and make it stand out from other shows with similar themes. For instance, the supporting cast in “Elusive Samurai” differs significantly from that of “Demon Slayer”, enriching the journey of our protagonist.
In the anime “Demon Slayer,” both main characters, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira, often cause irritation due to their exaggerated and whimsical traits. However, Tokiyuki’s companions, known as The Elusive Warriors, are relatively calm, each exhibiting distinct abilities that prove useful in combat, thereby aiding their young master and lord.
In the series Elusive Samurai, humor isn’t entirely missing; in fact, Yorishige’s ability to foresee events is often employed comically, but the amusement derived from this may depend on individual taste in humor. Interestingly enough, both shows share a common trait – they swiftly transition between comedic scenes and intense horror reminiscent of Mitsuri Kanroji wielding her whip-sword in combat.
In essence, if you’re a fan of Demon Slayer, there’s plenty to appreciate in Elusive Samurai. Given that Demon Slayer is about to conclude with its upcoming movie trilogy called Infinity Castle, Tokiyuki’s story in Elusive Samurai could serve as a spiritual successor, providing solace for fans who are saddened by the impending end of Demon Slayer.
