Elton John’s vision has deteriorated since eye infection
As a cinema devotee who has witnessed the magical transformation of stories into moving pictures, I find myself deeply moved by Elton John’s recent health struggles. A man whose music has been the soundtrack of my life for decades, now grappling with vision loss – it’s a poignant reminder that even the brightest stars sometimes dim.
Legendary singer-songwriter Elton John, famously known for hits like “Rocket Man” and “Tiny Dancer,” has shared that his vision has begun to weaken.
On the opening night of “The Devil Wears Prada” musical in London, I, a 77-year-old singer-songwriter, shared some personal health news. Being the composer for this stage adaptation, I expressed to the audience that my declining vision made it challenging for me to fully enjoy the West End spectacle as I would have liked.
Due to losing my sight, the Grammy Award winner explained that they’ve missed out on attending many previews. However, they shared their delight in hearing the performances, stating emphatically, ‘It sounded fantastic tonight!’
Prior to its London premiere last Sunday, the “The Devil Wears Prada” musical, which is adapted from the beloved 2006 movie of the same title, first made its appearance on stage in Chicago during the year 2022.
John recently disclosed additional insights on his recent vision issues, which were first discussed in September when he announced a severe summer eye infection had caused “reduced vision in one of his eyes.” In an Instagram post, this multiple award-winner expressed that the recovery has been a lengthy and tedious journey. He also informed his followers that it would take some time before he fully regains sight in the affected eye. Previously, he expressed optimism about his recuperation process.
The performer, known for his roles in “The Lion King” and “Billy Elliot” musicals, recently shared details about his health, particularly his eyes, during an interview with Good Morning America in November. He revealed that in July, while he was in France, his right eye became infected and ever since then, he’s had trouble seeing from it. During the same conversation, he mentioned that his left eye isn’t perfect either.
The performer confided in Roberts that he was experiencing a sense of stagnation, explaining how his current situation has hindered his capacity to create new tunes and also made it difficult for him to engage with any form of media, be it reading or watching something. Yet, despite these challenges, he expressed gratitude for his life, which is the focus of the upcoming documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” coproduced by his spouse, David Furnish, and filmmaker R.J. Cutler. The documentary will debut on Disney+ from December 13.
On “Good Morning America,” he declared, “I feel like the most fortunate individual globally.” He further commended both his family and himself, expressing pride in his self-perception and current circumstances. In essence, he considers himself incredibly blessed.
