Elton John’s brutal truth forced a schism with Billy Joel

Elton John and Billy Joel stand out as the most successful piano-centered rock artists throughout rock music history. Other notable figures, like Little Richard, have left an indelible mark, but none can match the commercial triumph of these two musicians. They eventually developed a friendship, although it didn’t last forever.

It seems that Joel’s predicament originates from his battle with alcohol addiction. Interestingly, John too has faced substance abuse issues, yet he managed to overcome them and now understands the kind of assistance required to attain a sober life.

In 2011, Elton John shared his thoughts on Billy Joel during an interview with Rolling Stone. More specifically, he discussed Joel’s stay in rehab, commenting that it wasn’t quite what he had anticipated. Elton John felt that Joel might have benefited more from a stricter approach than the relaxed environment he observed.

Elton John’s tough talk miffed Billy Joel

The renowned English pianist expressed, “Upon my visit to the rehabilitation center, I was tasked with mopping the floors. Unlike me, he goes to a rehab facility equipped with televisions. Billy, I deeply care for you, and this is a tough love. Billy, you’re grappling with inner struggles, and they won’t vanish overnight at a light rehabilitation center. You need to be committed. People admire you, cherish you, and respect you greatly. Surely, you’re capable of achieving more than what you’re currently doing.

In the latest HBO Max documentary titled “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” Billy expresses surprise over something John said. Their relationship had been strained for quite some time, and this discord originated from a controversial interview in Rolling Stone magazine.

As your fellow enthusiast, let me remind you, “Hold on just a moment. Aren’t we past this by now? For a brief spell, there were some misunderstandings and events that transpired, which I believe contributed to the temporary rift.

Even though a significant period passed following his interview, Billy Joel continued to struggle with alcohol addiction. It wasn’t until after the COVID-19 pandemic and the year 2023 that he managed to achieve sobriety permanently. This was remarkable considering his history of two rehab stays, which, if they offered any relief at all, only provided temporary respite.

Billy Joel is currently grappling with a brain condition known as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), which has left him unable to perform. It’s uncertain if he will ever be able to return to performing, as this condition can lead to cognitive decline, trouble walking, and other complications. This was the reason why Joel could not attend the premiere of the HBO Max documentary.

It’s great news that Billy Joel and Elton John have reconciled. Sometimes, a friend pointing out a problem can be beneficial, even if it causes temporary discomfort. After all, feelings can get hurt when we care deeply about someone. In this instance, it seems that one friend was genuinely concerned about the other, despite the public disagreement.
