Elton John pokes fun at his regressive eyesight as he presents with Brandi Carlile at 2025 Golden Globe Awards

At the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, held on a Sunday, Elton John didn’t shy away from making light fun of himself as he teamed up with Brandi Carlile for their joint presentation.

77-year-old music icon teamed up with a 43-year-old artist in a duo to present the award for the best original film score. This honor went to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, aged musicians and composers, for their work on Challengers’ soundtrack, characterized by powerful electronic rhythms.

However, prior to revealing the positive news he had for the members of Nine Inch Nails, Elton John amused the crowd with a joke concerning his deteriorating vision, a condition he disclosed he had been dealing with since July of the previous year.

He started off with a comforting tone during the event, hosted by Emmy-nominated comedian Nikki Glaser at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, to clarify that despite all the stories circulating about his deteriorating eyesight, it’s not as serious as it may appear.

He went on to express his delight, saying, “I’m thrilled to be here alongside my fellow host,” followed by a brief pause for dramatic impact, “and that’s Rihanna!

Brandi remained calm despite the audience’s laughter at the mix-up joke, followed by a brief round of applause, before starting her speech.

She acknowledged and honored the ‘feeling-laden scenery’ of movie soundtracks, which engage ‘an interactive dialogue with the viewers via the music.’

Toward the conclusion of their performance, the two artists disclosed that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score for Challengers had been awarded top honors. Remarkably, Trent Reznor – previously known as the frontman for a renowned industrial band – embraced Elton, who has contributed memorable film scores such as The Lion King, signifying their shared success in this field.

Despite achieving their most lively tune of the year due to its dance beats, the duo also teamed up once more with director Luca Guadagnino for the lauded score of his adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novella “Queer,” starring former James Bond actor Daniel Craig, which he helmed.

At the ceremony, Elton sported a sleek black tuxedo and a matching shirt, making him look quite dapper. On the other hand, Brandi stood out as a striking contrast in a beautiful cream-colored tuxedo with an unusually long shawl lapel – much longer than what Elton was wearing.

She elegantly combined her outfit, sporting a cream-colored vest and finished it with an untied white blouse.

Elton was reunited at his table with his partner David Furnish, who he started dating in 1993. They formalized their relationship with a civil partnership in 2005 and eventually got married in the UK in 2014, following the legalization of same-sex marriage there.

David rocked a tie-free black tuxedo with notched lapels and a white shirt. 

Brandi took a seat at the same table as Elton John’s partner, Catherine Shepherd (the two got married in 2012), on that particular occasion.

Catherine favored an all-black suit that contrasted her wife’s tux nicely. 

In the month of July, 2024, Elton initially disclosed significant deterioration in his vision during a chat on Good Morning America.

I’m absolutely devastated to confess that during my recent sojourn in France, I fell victim to an insidious infection which robbed me of the precious sight in my right eye.

Four months have passed since he can no longer see, and his left eye isn’t in great shape. He’s keeping a positive outlook, hoping for improvement, but currently finds himself in a stationary situation.

Despite harboring the hope that his sight could be restored, he acknowledged that it greatly hindered his ability to create new music.

He clarified, “I have the ability to accomplish tasks similar to this, however, when it comes to going into the studio and recording, I’m unsure because I can’t see a lyric right off the bat. Currently, our focus is on improving that aspect.

Regardless of the obstacle, Elton’s amusing performance at the Globes demonstrated that he can continue to entertain his fans, even with his vision issues.

In 2021, the nominees for the Golden Globes are primarily centered around Ariana Grande from Wicked, Cynthia Erivo, and Emilia Perez in a musical drama, receiving the highest number of nominations.

Jacques Audiard’s unique, dreamlike narrative blending crime, music, and gender transformation centered around a former Mexican drug lord now living as a woman, garnered 10 nominations, fueling the competitive spirit in the run-up to the Oscars.

In this unconventional movie, Karla Sofía Gascón takes on the lead role as the title character, while Selena Gomez, who is also a singer, and Zoe Saldaña are featured in secondary roles.

Each of the three contenders is nominated for an award at the Golden Globes, an event often considered a predictor for the Oscars.

In a different wording, the movie version of the popular Broadway musical “Wicked” received four nominations, with one each going to pop star Ariana Grande and stage legend Cynthia Erivo.

Grandee, receiving her inaugural Golden Globe nomination, is showcased in the ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture’ category. This recognition is for her portrayal of Galinda Upland in the fantasy-drama production, which takes inspiration from The Wizard of Oz.

In a collaborative effort, the multitalented actress is set to appear alongside her dear friend Selena Gomez and Margaret Qualley, who garnered widespread acclaim for her chilling performance in the horror film “The Substance”, in the upcoming project titled Emilia Perez.

In the same vein, both Isabella Rossellini and Zoe Saldana have been recognized for their performances in Concave, with Isabella Rossellini also receiving a nomination for her role as Emilia Perez.

Prior to the announcement of nominations, Clayton Davis, Senior Awards Editor at Variety, proposed that the final three award categories be reserved for the comedy-musical genre, particularly the lead actress category, which he referred to as a “bloodbath” due to its intense competition.

There are several strong contenders for the Lead Actress award, including Karla Sofía Gascón from Erivo, Emilia Perez’s star, Mikey Madison from Anora, perennial favorite Amy Adams for Nightbitch, Demi Moore for The Substance, and Zendaya from Challengers. It’s possible that any of these talented actresses could take the prize.

As an ardent moviegoer, I can’t contain my excitement as I share this news: “Wicked,” alongside blockbusters like Deadpool, Wolverine, Twisters, Inside Out 2, Beetlejuice sequel, and the surprisingly underappreciated Gladiator II, has earned recognition for its Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. What a time to be alive!

In the running for Best Movie Drama is Brady Corbet’s film titled “The Brutalist”. Additionally, Adam Brody, Felicity Jones (a renowned actress from Britain), and Guy Pearce received nominations in the acting category for their exceptional performances, with these last three being recognized for their supporting roles.

This category additionally includes two movies that feature Timothée Chalamet. These are the Bob Dylan biopic titled “A Complete Unknown” and the sequel to “Dune,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, which is known as “Dune: Part Two.

Timothée Chalamet is nominated in the category of Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture for his portrayal of the influential folk singer Dylan, alongside Daniel Craig for Queer, Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump in The Apprentice, and Colman Domingo for Sing Sing – a movie about an individual unjustly imprisoned who discovers meaning through involvement with a theater troupe.

Among those nominated for Conclave is the renowned British actor, Ralph Fiennes, who stands as the frontrunner for the Best Actor in a Drama category due to his compelling performance as a tormented priest presiding over a papal election.

English actor Eddie Redmayne found himself among the initial favorites, earning recognition in the Best Television Actor in a Drama Series category, due to his leading performance in the Sky Original series “The Day of the Jackal.

In the movie “Presumed Innocent,” the actor is up against tough rivalry from Jake Gyllenhaal for the role. Meanwhile, Donald Glover received recognition with a nomination for his portrayal in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

For the part he played in “Presumed Innocent,” the actor has stiff competition from Jake Gyllenhaal. On the other hand, Donald Glover got a nod for his performance in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” with a nomination.

In the Apple TV+ series Slow Horses, Gary Oldman’s captivating performance has garnered a well-deserved nomination. Meanwhile, Hiroyuki Sanada and Billy Bob Thornton have each received recognition with their nominations for Shogun and Landman respectively.

The Netflix series “Baby Reindeer,” penned by Richard Gadd, has garnered recognition. It’s been nominated in the category for Outstanding Limited Series or Anthology Series and Television Film, while its leading actress, Jessica Gunning, received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

The show will go head-to-head with Ripley, the buzzed-about biopic of the Menendez Brothers (Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story), True Detective’s latest installment titled Night Country, and the highly anticipated series, The Penguin.

baby reindeer received another recognition in the category of Male Actor in a Limited Series, sharing the spotlight with Colin Farrell in “The Penguin,” Kevin Kline in “Disclaimer,” Andrew Scott in “Ripley,” also Kevin Kline for “Disclaimer” and debutant Cooper Koch in “Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story.”

This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler and more natural language.

In other awards, it was unexpected that directors Jon M. Chu (for Wicked) and Ridley Scott (Gladiator II) were not nominated in the Best Director – Motion Picture category, even though their films had massive box office earnings.

I was thrilled to collaborate alongside Emilia Perez director Jacques Audiard, Sean Baker on Anora, Edward Berger for Concave, Bradley Corbet for The Brutalist, Coralie Fareget for The Substance, and Payal Kapadia for All We Imagine Is Light – six remarkable filmmakers in a fierce competition that heated up the industry.

Australian actress Cate Blanchett has likewise received recognition, with the multiple award-winner being nominated for Best Actress in a Limited Series, for her performance in Disclaimer.

In True Detective: Night Country, she teams up with Jodie Foster; in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, she appears alongside Naomi Watts; in The Penguin, she collaborates with Cristin Milioti; and she works with British actress Kate Winslet in The Regime.

Jeremy Allen White secures another nomination for “The Bear,” this round being for the Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical TV Series category.

The performer collaborates with Adam Brody on Nobody Wants This, teams up with Ted Danson in A Man On The Inside, and partners with Steve Martin and Martin Short for Only Murders In The Building.

Among this year’s nominees, I was honored to be listed alongside the iconic Kathy Bates, whose captivating performance in Matlock landed her a spot in the Best Television Female Actor in a Drama Series category.

Previously, Oppenheimer had a triumphant evening at the Golden Globes, receiving five significant awards during the event.

For the very first time, the renowned British filmmaker, Sir Christopher Nolan, received the title of Best Director following his sixth nomination. Meanwhile, Irish actor Cillian Murphy was awarded Best Actor in a Drama category for his portrayal of a man associated with the development of the atomic bomb.

At the upcoming event, Ted Danson, renowned from “Cheers,” is set to get the Carol Burnett Award, recognizing exceptional accomplishments in TV, whether on-screen or behind the scenes. Additionally, Viola Davis will be presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her outstanding achievements in cinema.
